The subject was the baptism of Christ, and Ivanhotf, who came up tou Rome with very little reputation even as an art student, and next to no general educa tion, read, thought, and worked fm nothing else but this one picture. H:- threw himself into the study of autiquity and of the Bible, and nothing but his pov erty prevented his exploring every inch o1 the Holy Land. Besides innumerable drawings, he made upward of two hundred finished sketches for his work. But his frame of mind changed in twenty-seven years, and his picture changed with it. Hi: came to Rome an orthodox Russian, fu! of the sentrment of Byzentine religious art; but Rome made him a free-thinker, and the change was not one that suited his temperament He made his picture more and more reaiistic, but it pleased him less and less. At last, when it was finished in 1858, he did not care about it any more, and he set out a disap pointed man tv take it back to Russia His picture went to the Moscow museum, and now all the Russian art world talks o: Ivanoff, though not one in a thousand knows what or how he painted. ——— Mack’s Macneric MEDICINE is a positive remedy for nervous «xhaustion and all weak ness of the generative organs in both sexes. told in ( harluttetown by Apothecaries Hall Co, dee advertisement in another colamn [july 22 2w wkly Special Notices.
