Nov. 1 - Lawson Drake will be the Society's guest speaker presenting "A Tribute to Francis Bain". The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Farm Centre on University Avenue. Nov. 12 - The Island Nature Trust's Seeds of Conservation will be held at various centres across the Island. The prices will be the same as last year and the sale will feature sunflower seed, corn, suet, grit, and books on bird feeding. The profits will be used to support the natural areas conservation programs of the Trust. Dec. 6 - The Society’s guest speaker will be Gary Schneider and he will provide a slide presentation from Cornell University on the decline of certain songbirds in North America. NEWS FROM ABOUT compiled by Dan McAskill Congratulations go out to Kate MacQuarrie of the Tryon River Association on the September 1st launch of the new booklet Ime Tryon River: A Guide to its Human and Natural History. Ecotourism promotion gone bad? On June 29th, Neil and Sally Bennett reported that horses and film crews arrived at 0600 hours on Cousin’s Shore to film horses and riders pounding up and down the shore and over the dunes for ecotourism promoth31 of the Island. After they discovered the film crew inside the posted (closed) area for Piping Plover and discussing the problem with the director, the director moved the crew out. This is hardly the actions ecotourists expect and most would be very upset by this type of behaviour. Congratulations to the Institute of Island Studies and The Island Nature Trust on the launching of Like the Back of My Hand at the Art's Guild Building on July 22. This video which combines readings selected from the journals of the late Geoff Hogan by Deirdre Kessler with the video imagery of Henry Dunsmore was viewed by a standing room only crowd of over 200 people. The comments heard on the preliminary release of this video were very good. This production is now available from the Institute of Island Studies.
