BY DANIEL GORRIB. Carrer I. Soon ‘after I obtained ‘my diploma, and was dubbed M. D., an ope ‘ning 101 a medical practitioner occurred in the pleasant village of St. Dunstan, situated on the beautiful banks of the Tweed. Knowing well that I might be fere- stafled bya day’s delay, L bundied up my testimonials and letters of recom- mendation, and departed at once for the scene of action. The shadows ot a calm October evening were drooping ever the Eildon Hills, and the Tweed was murmuring peacefully along its winding course, when I entered the principal street of the village, and took up myequarters at the inn. After re- freshing myself’ with such éntertain- ment as theshouse, afiorded, I called in the landlord, told’ him he object of my visit, and inquired if any other medical gdntlémod dad yet made ‘their ap- pdargnces”\ Mine host Was a canny, cautious Scotchman, and manifested due deliberation in a matter of so much moment, » lle surveyed me quietly;for & short time; and did not reply until he seenred satisfied with his scrutiny. “Na, sir” he said at length; “ye’re the first. that’s come to the oun yet, and a’ the folk are wearying for anith- er.doctor. Ye see, we canna’ tell what may happen. The shoemaker’s wife todk unco onweel last nicht, and, frail as he is himsel, puir man, he had to gang a the way to Meliose, for medical advice. Ye look young like, sir; hae ye been in ony place afore?” No," T replied ; “it is not very long since I passed,” ‘Ay, weel, thats no sae gude ; rather like:a skeely man here. Dr. Sorhmervillé bad a great deal 0! | yerience, aud we were a sorry when he left for Glasgow.” “Lam glad thatthe good people of St. Dunstan liked their last doctor so well,” I rejoined somewhat nettled at the plain-spokenness of the wor thy lord of the Cross-Keys, ‘‘But although my youth may be against me, ' 1 con- tinued, “here are some testimonials which I hope may prove satisfactory, and I have.several letters of recom- mendation besides to gentlemen in the village and neighbor hood. ” we The landlord was a@ person whom 1{-”- saw that it wasmegessary tojgain over. He was vastly pleased “when I recog: nized his importance by producing my testimonials for his inspection. Li was amusing to observe the gravity and dignity with which he adjusted his spectacles across the bridge of his nose4’— and proceeded to carefdlly inspect the documents. At intervals as he read h¢ gave such ranning comments as ‘“cude’—“very . gude”’—“excellent”— “Capital sir, capital |?” I was glad to see the barometer rising so rapididly. After mine host had finished the perus- al of the papers, he shook me hear tily Dy. the hand, and said, “You're the y man we want, sir; ye hae first rate caraiiicals.” ‘So far} so good. Ttwas a great thing to’have gained the contidenee and good will of so important a personage, and L felt desirous of making further ,con- quests that evening. “Do you think 1 might, ‘yenture to eal, to-night upon any “of the parties imthe village to whom.Lhave letters; oftrecommendation ?’” I inquired. “Sarely; surely,” responded the land- lord; “the sooner the better. Just read me ower their names, sir, and [71] . ‘eye round to theimhouses. We hae {terchance ©’ geftin’ them in ab} niekt than through the day.” * Accompanied” “by the ford ‘of the CrosseKeys, Laccordingly visited. the, leading inhabitants of the village, an made what an expectant member of Parliament would consider a very sat- isfactory canyass. I was received with much, courtesy .and. civility ; and the raimister of: the parish to whom I hada lester Of -introduction froma brother clergyman in Edinburgh, paid me the most flattering attentions, and. pressed me to take up my abode immediately at St. Dnnstan, The: ladies married and unmatvied; with whom I entered into conversatien, were all unaminous in expressing their desire that T should eine Oe fh , d baye, oneere at tHe fomale .sex invari- me take the ' gretitest interest in the nent of ministers anddoctors.
