JAMES At the morning diet. of divine wor- ship the Holy Communion was re- ceived by a. a gregation in a most beautiful ser- vice which was fully choral under the direction of Miss E. Lillian Mc- Kenzie, Mus. Bac., church orBB-"i-‘ii- The elder: assisted the minister in the celebration and administration of the blessed sacrament. In the evening a service of solemn thanks- giving was held when the minister, Rev. T. H. Bussell Somers. M-A. B- T.M., preached on the text "Take away her battlements, for they are not the Lord's" Jeremiah 5:10, and said in part: To begin with. I WWW think of the Bible, that little vol- ume to which our debt is infinitg. that revelation of the love of God crowned in the priceless ift of a Redeemer. It is the boo _whosc words we learn in it i5 the book we turn to when we die. It is the book that comforts us in suffering, cheers us in battle, heart- ene us in toll. It is the only book that never fails us amid all the change and chequer of the ears, for it is hi her than our hghest thought, an it is deeper than our deepest need. Is, then, the Bible an inspired book? Go, ask yon suffer- er upon her sickbed. Ask yon sinner who has found a Saviour there, in the hour when his feet were on the brink of hell, and vain was the help of man. It is such things, and it is such things only, that are the valid roof of God in scripture. It is not nerrancy. nor verba literal rendering of historic detail. And wherever men have buttressed up the Bible by proofs which were never intended by its giver, there- has oome a voice which once was heard in Judah, "Take away her battlemente, for they are not the Lord's". That is what true research has always done-all loving, patient, critical inquiry. It has not touched the living word of God. It has re- moved the battlements God never built. And so it has drawn us nearer to that heart which is forever throb- hing in the word, in whose mercy is our only hope, and in whose will is our peace. Indian River C.W.L.
