     Dear Editor: 
     
    

    
     During the panel discussion concerning the 
     
     underfunding of post-secondary education on PEI 
     
     held Jan. 20th, the National Action Week com- 
     
     mittee and the representatives of the university 
     
     gave many examples of where this underfunding 
     
     is having negative effects on the quality of our 
     
     education: research funds have declined, support 
     
     staff has been cut, student aid is inadequate, the 
     
     availability of learning material has suffered, lab 
     
     equipment is outdated and classrooms are over- 
     
     crowded. 
     
    
   
   
    
     Now the best example that Ian MacDonald, a 
     
     member of the Budget committee of UPEI could 
     
     offer is that the basketball and hockey teams 
     
     needed new uniforms. I-would hope that when 
     
     it comes to allocating the limited funds available 
     
     that MacDonald and the rest of the committee 
     
     members will put education ahead of athletics.
