THE CORONATION HONORS- The honors bestowed upon Canadian public men at the coronation are some- what notable in several ways, for ins- tance in regard to the persons selected for Knighthood and those omitted who had equally as strong or stronger claims to that distinction. Sir Robert Brat of Halifax affords afine example ofa suc- cessful merchant, whose career is that of a thoroughly honorable upright and far- seeing man of business. He has not-, however, ‘been noted for brilllancy ln pnl’t'ca‘a§‘alr=, nor as a great leader of men. Sir Frederick Borden no doubt receives his new title on account of the prompt and successful way in which he and his subordinauas organized' and de- spatched the successive contlogents of Canadian troops to South Africa. He has made anexaellent Minister of Mili- tia, no doubt, as Sir William Muloclr has made an excellent and moat' progressive postmaster general. Both Mrs. Bordon and llulook had a claim upon the Imperial Governmentfor important services to the lmpire in con- nection with the late war and the iran- gura ion of Imperial penny postage. But certainly their claims were not greater than those cf Hon. llr. Fielding who in- troduced the preferential tariU, Twho had been for many years Premier of Nova Sco‘ia and has since held one of the foremost pmsitlons in the Dominion Government. We doubt not that Hr. Fielding could have had the honor of Knighthocd if he would, but preferred to see it bestowed upon his colleague in the Cabinet and upon his lifelong friend Mr. Boak. Hon. Mr. Blair had doubtless quite as much claim ta the decoration of S". Michael and St. George as either of those who received it. His due talents, hh long Premiership of New Brunswick. A his indisputably fremoet posit’on as a leader in that Province and his great prominence in the councils of his party are all indications that he was well entitled to the honor of Knigbthood if he desirei it, which it seems probable he dil not. Then tht re is Hon. J. I. Tarte, who is certainly one of the leading spirits of the Liberal combination. It is true that he his not been at (any time the actual Premier or lfafler ct his Province a.- Messrs. Blair and Fielding have been, but after Sir Wilfred Laurier there is no one who stands so near to the leadership of French Canadian Liberalism asllr. Tarie. We doubt not that a. title awaits him in the future and he is young enough to wait. Mr. Tarts has been so much in the public eye, so active and conspleious for years past, that many Canadians must have been surprised when a comparatively unknown man such as Lleut~Governcr ¢ ndQvar_ _costin .' if v 3’ ¢ _“*-'__'*__“' -P-' JE "' _ 4~ .. , C0 PINE CUSTOM TAILORING* This spring cur business in the Custom Tailoring is the largest and best wehave ever had. ' ~ ' - . We are proud and pleased to see the numberof new customers _ we are getting in this department. ' This is a good proof that we are giving good values in __ reli- able up-to-date materials with best workmanship and above all htting clothing which are appreciated. _ the spring trade also llcMlllan of Manitoba was knigh ‘ted and the Dominion llnlater of Public Works passed by. And soalaoln the Maritime Provinces there is a general and wide- spread feeling that if only two decorations were to be given for this section of Canada they ought not to have been both confined to Nova Scotia. i Doubtless the list will be extended ln the not dls'ant years and racogul ion will then be given to some whose claims are already sudlclently strong. ’ Goldwln Smith noted recently what he conceived to be a tendency to revert to personal gwernment in England. one indication biing that it is proposed to change the wording ot ,the Nat'ounl Anthem, by substituting the words “Our Lord the King” for “Our Gracious Kina' " lt turns out, however, that as first written and assuug through several reigns the the wcrds ran “God Save Our Lord ihe King." The word "gracious" was ln- trodu/ced at the beginning of Queen Victoria`s reign for the sole reason that she could not he called lord, and the wi rl lidy would make the line too long by n syllable a id would not scan. It is contended hy n uriter in the Engineering Magazine tl uf- the construc- credltad wits the introduction and ex-, it tension ofthe ballot system in Dominl an Il a1d_P|-ovlnclal elections pretty Genera- T lily. But in the Province of Oatarol tion cf the Paumna anne] will he a hem fit llcved io be hostile to the canal. Tne experience of Canada, where the iaual syf tems are parallels by sevt ra Ipril cipal railway lines goes to show that while canals are of undoubted advantage to the country they are not dangerous or in jurious competitors with the railways. All the better paying portions of freight tramc go to the railways, while the heavy, coarse, raw products, which can only be carried at a liw rate of freight, and which do not need tobe hurried to their destination, find transport by the canals. The effect is that the freight is transported by rad ways at a much higher average rate than ifihere were no canals. We doubt not that when the Panama canal is pat in opwacion some years hence as there is now good reason to A be- lieve will be the case, the gr at :always across the continent will find even more freight to t°ansport than they do today.
