LETTERS TO THE EDITOR How Did You Vote ? ~~ SIR, It is curious to think, How tho Scott Act's non-rejection, Makes the liqyor-lovers wink And laugh over the electio’; and well they may, for they '.andicapped the Prohibitionists, the High License men, aud Temperance folk ali ina‘body. The simple fact is that what quite a number of voters intended todo is just what they didu’t, Many of*those who were instructed to cast a vute for the Scott Act thoughtthey were dbing s0 when they voted for the Petition, and vice versa; and the proba- bility is that were the voting done ayer again, without this X-acting maticeuvre, but a |_| issue made of far or ‘tgainst the Scorr Act, the verdict woukl be altogether reversed—-and the lesser of the two evils (as Alpha put it) would be the popular choice, High License, with all of its rsponsi}:'- day. ‘The liquor interest has fairly ouc- witted the abstinent public, and the farce of litigation over perjury an) protected crime has to goon till the quystion comes up again for a ballot settlement, when it is hoped the friends of law and_ order will be wise enough in their day and generation to no nian, though a fool, can err therein. RETSGAB. —_ — Good Ventilation. Every house in England has a_ ventilala- tor, ot a dozen of them, by way. of the chimneys. Here, however, we hermetically seal up our houses for five months in the year, and it too often happens that we have no ventilator at all. . Human life is chiefly dependent on food and the oxygen of the air for its sustenance, and when we deprive ourselves of any one of these vital -auxili- aries we destroy ourselves. And this.is just what we do. — In our housés, we inhale and re-inha’e the deadly carbonic acid gas while we kee, out the oxygen, and then we won- der at. our high rate of mortality. Then when we add tu all this our miserable sani- tary arrangements it is no wonder we have a high «leath rate. —Menireal Star. HOTEL ARRIVALS. RANKIN HOUSE.
