Everybody in this country- knowS that
the oi§1'y thing worth while in the world to-
day i fto win the _wai_'. ln the -face _of the
possilhlities involved in a Ge_rma_n triumph
nothing else matters. Nothing in the way
of individual coinf01‘t, individual SUCCQSS,
or iiidividual' failure can weigh for a mo-
ineiit`against` the consequences to the
ivorld, to civilization, to human freedom,
if Germany should win, if Gerinanlsm
should not be utterly and absolutely crush-
ed. _
This tlimielit should be the underlying.
motive iii all our endeavors and it would be
'ii' we looked the situation fairly and
sqiiareljv in the face, if we looked at it as
we really believe it to be. Unfortunately
there are cross currents, there are person-
al ambitious, there are partizan aspira--’
tions that take precedence of thethings
that are vital, the things that so many are
d_ving for, the things upon which the future
of the world and ofcivilization depends. i
In this province, apart from what we
have' done and are still doing in giving of
our best manliood and of 'our means, the
_‘greatest help ive can give novv is to add to
the 'food supply. 'l"o\vards this every possi-
ble ellort should be directed by word and
dee<l: a very fever of enthusiasm should be
created iii the press, from the pulpit, from
the platform. The slogan should be Pro-
duction and _Coiisei‘vatioii. Produce any-
thing and ever_vthing that can be produc-
ed for iood; save everything that can be
cxportetl as food. To carry on such a cam-
paign would be real patriotism, f
‘.‘Whai, is the use of putting forth extra
eilort for the sake of production if prices
are going to drop?" asks the man whose
eye is fixed on the dollar bill. “Why should
we help on a campaign inaugurated by our
political opponents?" asks the little politi-
cal partizan. “Why should I save up my
flour and beef and bacon while my neighbor
is ‘gorging’ himself with these?" asks the
covetoiis one. And the answer to all is “It
doesn’t matter what price you get or what
'political party wins, or what your neighbor
eats or i°ei‘_raiiis from eating; thething is
to produce more food and to save more
food and win the war or let these things
go and lose the war. Should this happen
our little selfish interests would look very
small ,under the new light that Germany
would sliedovei' the world.
We _are producing now in _this country
less than halfof what could be pi'oduced
even with the facilities we have; many are
econoniiziiig on food either patriotically or
oi’ necessity. Many more are doing neith-
er. We need an epidemic of production and
economy; we need to create a patriotic at-
mosphere and this can be done only by
patriotic effort on the part of all, an edort
at encouragement and mutual stirring up
to good works. It is no time for haggling
and hairsplitting distinctions as to why or
for whom or by whom. It is°everybody‘s
iight for life and evei'ybody’s responsibili-
ty. There is nothing to fear from the en-
emy if we are true to ourselves but there is
everything to feai' if we fail in our duty.

As if this old world did not contain en -
ough to worry over some cheerful pessim-
ist has now discovered that great men die

Alexander the Great died at thirty-two,
having conquered practically the whole
world of histday; Julius Caesar was dead at
fifty-five. Napoleon died at fifty-two, Oli-
ver Cromwell at fifty-nine, Shakespeare at
fifty-two, Charles Dickens at fifty-eight.
Nearly all the men who made the French
Revolution were dead before they were
fifty; many of them before they were
forty. Robespierre was only thirty-six
when he died, Desmoulins thirty-four,
Danton thirty-live, and Mirabeau forty-
two. The ordinary pessimist looking for
trouble could add to the list almost indefin-
itely: Robert Burns, Lord Byron, Robert
Louis Stevenson and inanyothers

“it is said," that “bran is selling today in
some places in this province as high as $48
a ton; and that a gentleman in the city
yesterday bought bran at the rate of $45 a
ton." These “quotations” are given by the
Patriot to prove that “farmérs, and others,
probably, are paying more for their bran
than previous to the order ofthe Food Con-
troller."
In a recent issue of The Guardian we
quoted, on the authority of the dealers in
Charlottetown, the prices charged here
for bran and niiddlings. These prices were
$2.20 a bag for bran and $2._50 for middl-
ings. This of course was the spot cash
price. .Enquiring again last night we were
assured by three of the largest dealers in
the city that the price has not varied a
cent from the quotations then given, nam-
ely $2.20 and $2.50.
Now if the Patriot wants to get at the
truth why not ask the dealers, who are in
a position, to know? Why base an accus-
ation on the “it is said” of some one who
may or may notbe as disinterested as it
appears to be? If the authority of t
complainant is indisputable why does not
the Patriot find out who is selling' these
feeds at illegal prices and apply the re-
medy.'_ No ealer can legally make the
charges quoted by the Patriot.

Yesterday’s Patriot makes the state-i
men - are bobbing up almost every day this
is not encouraging. It puts a sort of wet
blanket on the great incentive to greatness
for it is everlastingly true that “all that a
man hath will he give for his life.” even his
greatness. After all, perhaps, as the term
“great” in this connection is not clearly de-
fined, including as it does, tyrants and re-
volutionists as well as literateurs and
philanthropists there may be less to fear
than we think. In any case the fact that
a man has outlived the age specified in the
above category does not necessarily imply.
