J., July 5. —On Friday af- ternoun there was a cloudburst near ‘his place, and the rainfall centinued for two hours and a half, causing the creek that runs through the town to overflow its hanks. A frame structure belonging to im. Teets, carpet manufacturer, was liited from its foundations aud borne down against the iron suspension bridge and com- pletely destroyed the bridge, which was 162 feet long. A dam, the property of W. aud FE. Thomas, flour millers, was also washed away. Ove child was drowned. The loss of live stock, buildings and crops, it is esti- mated, will reach $100,000. The tracks were torn out within 100 feet of where the Oswego express was wrecked a few yoars ago, and the same train was appreaching the washout when it was fligged just in time by a man who had discovered the danger. . Maprson, Wis., July 6.—News has been received of a cloudburst which occurred in Richland county and occasioned a less of $200,000 or more. Four mill dams were carcied out between Richland Centre and Lone Reck. An iron bridge was wrecked at Magle Mills. Crops suffered greatly. Fasted Ninety Days. PITIABLE PLIGHT OF A WOMAN DYING OF STARVATION, An Allentown, Pa., despatch says: The | benefits more or less directly or indirectly on Monday, /every man woman and child ie Prince; te Edward Island. le. ls" . Such a course would have driven thousands of our people to absolute want, aud many of them would have been forced to leave their homes to earn a living for themselves and their famil- ies, which an unwise and arbitrary policy denied them at home. That the Minister or his deputy ean pos- sib'y understand the practical working of lobster factories, or the actual effect of the regulations as applied to them, is more than jcould be expected; but that the Minister jshould ignure ithe wranimvus memorial of jthose more directly engaged inthe business, |—many of whom have their all invested in lit, —the wnanimous memorial of the mem- lbersof the Isiand legislature, and the | memorial of the New Brunswick legislature, {and the many letters from leading political jand busivess men—it is to my mind simply | inexcusable and, as | have already told the unparalleled in any civilized jeountry; and j am at a loss to understand jhow he can justify the adoption of the | policy of his subordinates, who have only a | superficial and theoretical knowledge of the (business, which, to every practical man, {is known to be only productive of evil. 1 also notice an editorial in the Daily | Patriot,of the 28th ult., on this subject, and iwith the exception of the editor’s charac- teristic sneers at myself, the case is fairly presented. 1am sure the views expressed by Commander Gordon, of the steamship Acadia, in his report are so fullof good com- mon sense and souad reasun, that they ares 1 beheve, endursed and approved of by every man on this Island who has given the subject any consideration. I may inform the editor of the Patriot that while in Ottawa, during the late ses- sion, [ endeavored to do my duty for the Province 1 represented, and took special pains in regard to this very subject, as very many at Ortawa and on this Island already know ; and however congenial and true to an envious nature it may be to sneer at and ridicule representative men for the purpose of lessening their usefulness, he will find such a course is only calcuisted to lower himself very much more i the estimation of all good citizens in a Caristian com-! rmousity. : lam, yours truly, Samuvet Prowse.
