Congratulations to non MacArthur on his ap- pointment as coach of the Prince County Combines—the new name we hadn't eard about until tonight — and we wish him success. Ron h a s plaved some fine hockey for Summerside teams. We re- member him as being one of the mainstays of a Midget team which won the Viral- time championship from Truro In a sudden death game at stellarton. and he's been going strong ever since. Looking over the available ta- lent. we would say one of the toughest jobs Ron will encoun- ter all winter faces him right at the outset —— whittling avail- able players down to a regula- tinn - sized roster. Not so strangely because hockey players often decide to retire. and then faced with the ex- citement of another year’s ac- tion change their minds. We hope they do. We need them. We didn’t know Ron McArihur ls Couch ‘ this practice, the Combines have 23 seasoned players, all with experience in the ISHL. plus a number of players trying out from other parts. Cutting this lot down to the 14 players who will play regu- larly is a man-sized job. This does not mean that when the whittling process is over, a super team will emerge. It means only that there are many of those boys who are so nearly equal in playing ability -- to the average fan’s eye, that is — that Ron may contract some headaches de- ciding who is to be "in" an ho is to be "out." Of course, more than 14 can be signed, but seasoned players do not like warming the bench during entire games. The melt- ing pot should produce a really good team, there isn't a 'doubt about that. and we have confi- ‘ sun.
