against the Government Marketing
Bill was lifted today, a dozen or
more clauses passing through coni-
mltteo stage to mark the first pro-
gress in a week of solid deadlock.
Two minor snags were reached
but the Conservatives p0oled their
strength to surmount each one and
accepted another suggestion from
the Liberals. Opposition members
from the extreme ends of the
country. the Maritimes and the Pa-
cific Coast, proposed excluding
fishing and lumbering from the'
provisions of the B111 but were out-
voted.
J. S. Woodsworth, leader of the
O. C. F. party presented an am-
endment with far-reachlng effects
but it was lost too. I-le wished to
include mining in the Bill and to
delete three or four words so that
any lndustry clothing or ftuniture.

"I think we should walk before
we run." was the brief comment of
Minister of Justice Hugh Guthrie,
arguing against the all-embracing
feature of the Woodsworth amend-
ment.
The Govemment accepted on
amendment proposed by Rt. Hon.
Mackenzie King in giving a meas-
ure of parliamentary control. Un-
der the bill as proposed by the gov-
ernment, and coiisldciing govern-
ment amendments, the Dominion
Marketing Board could draw mon-
ey from the consolidated revenue of
tho country with the approval of
an order-in-council. Under the
King amendment, which passed the
House, Parliament would vote the
money which the board could
spend. _
Judging from the attitude of the
I-louse, particularly the Liberals, it
was believed the blockade was end-
ed although a major fight loomed
on another phase of the bill. It
was understood the Liberals would
continue their iight to have mar-
keting schemes approved by Par-
liament and Partictuarly to take
from the boards power to name
offences for which the bill pro-
vides prison terms.
An amendment to delete fish
and lumber from the operation of
the blll was moved by Mr. Reid
and A. W. Neill (Ind. Comox-AL
bernl), supported ir.
Hon. H. I-f. Stevens, Minister of
Trade and Commerce, cited instan-
ces in which the application of the
legislation to fish and~ lumber
might be very useful in assisting
thsee industries ln the expansion
of export trade.
William Duff (Lib. Antlgonlsh-
Ouysboro), strongly supported tho
amendment and declared the bill
would not benefit the fishermen ol
Nova Scotia in the least.
The amendment to drop fish
and lumber from the bill was lost
but not before F. P. Quinn, (Cons.
Halifax). expressed the opinion the
bill would be of assistance to the
Nova Scotia fnhexmen.

gerford, Presidont of the Canadian
National Railways, of the appoint-
ment of E. P- Mallory as assistant
to the president. In addition to his

of prominent farmers from the sur-
rounding district of Summei-side,
at the dimer given by the Bum-
merslde Board of Trade last night
at the Queen Hotel.
The meeting was called with the
dlea of forming an agricultural
committee of the Suminerside
Board of Trade so that there
would be better co-operation be-
tween tradesinen and farmers. The
main object of this agricultural
committee was to express an opin-
ion on the building of frost proof
warehouses to regulate the ship-
ping of potatoes. Mr. B. W. Robin-
son, President of the Summerslde
Board of Trade, presided. Mayoi
Lidstone was on his left and the
guest speaker, Mr. J. O. Hyndman.
on his right. Members of the gov-
ernment present were Hon. G.
Shelton Sharp, Hon. Thomas Mac-
Nutt, Hon. Walter M. Lea, Mr. L. R.
Allen, M.L.A., Dr. J. F. MacNelll,
M.L.A. Other prominent people
present were Mr. James E. Birch,
Alberton; D. B. McDonald, T. J.
Inman. Rev. Mr. Nicholson, Wallace

After the farmers had been wel-
comed by Mr. Robinson and Mayor
Lidstone, Mr. J. 0. Hyndman was
called to address the meeting. He
stressed the importance of co-
operation between business men
and farmers as the two bodies are
dependent upon one another.
Transportation is one of the most
important factors in farming. Mar-
keting end distribution is also a.
great factor. All these things can
be brought about by cooperation.
He also stressed the great need of
frost proof warehouses so that the
farmers do not suffer from a glut
on the market. He was pleased to
state that this was meeting with
the approval of the government.
Cooperative marketing and the
marketing board should work. to-
gether to seek new markets for our
products. No more useful service
could be rendered by the Depart-
ment orngrlculture than to assist
and educate the farmers along
these lines. Several farmers pres-
ent expressed their views on the
subject of cooperative marketing
and the greater cooperation of
farmer and business man. Hon. G.
Shelton Sharp. I-Ion. Thomas Mac-
Nutt, Hon. Waiter M. Lea, gave ex-
oellent addresses and each con-
gratulated the Summerside Board
of Trade in their endeavour to
create s. better feeling between
town and country.

today that he had no knowledge of

idence of two witnesses was taken
when the hearing of Carl Steeves,
charged with an attempt to mur-
der Ml.ss<Lue1la Lund, was corn-
menced before Magistrate R. D.
Mitten in police court this morning.
Rev. J. L. Lund of Albany, P. E. I.,
upon whose information the police
began the investigation that re-
sulted in the charges being laid
against Steeves, told of the receipt
of a letter puiporting to have been
written by the accused. The witness
told of his coming to Moncton and
placing the matter in the hands of
Chief of Police L, S. Hutchinson.
ll/lisa Luella Lund gave evidence
regarding an attack she alleged was
made on her on the night of May
9, in which she was struck by the
,accused over the head with a bottle
and o. piece of pipe. Miss Lund was
still on the stand when court was
adjourned until this afternoon at
2.30.
F. P. Murphy appeared for the
prosecution. The accused, who was
arrested on a warrant on Monday,
following a mental test at the City
Hospital, was represented by G. F.
G. Bridges. The case was set over
until the morning, following
Steeves' appearance in court yes-
terday morning.

first witness called, said that he
was a clergyman stationed on the
Tryon, P. E. I., circuit and re -

previously, although he might have
done so.
Mr. Murphy submitted a letter
and envelope, which were identi-
fied by the witness as having been
received by him on Thursday, May
10, addressed to himself and his
wife and postmarked Moncton. He
sold the letter had arrived between
10 and ll o’clock in the morning
and that il; had been opened by
his wife. He was in his study at
the time and heard Mrs. Lund cry
out in alarm. She had read the
letter to him and had then handed
it to him. He immediately came
here by motor-car and tumed the
lett/er over to Chief of Police
Hutchinson. Another envelope,
which had come at the same time
was also identified by the witness
as one which he had received but
had not opened. It was also post-
marked Moneton and he had not
seen the content; until Chief Hut-
chinson had opened the letter. The
mail was delivered to his house by
the mailman on the rural route,
tho witness said, and was deposited
in a box at the end of the person-
_age lane.
` When he had given the letters
'fo Chief Hutchinson. the unopened
envelope was opened and found to
contain a- life insurance policy of
Carl Bteeves, said the witness.

Mr. Lund said that he had been
in charge of the Bunny Bree
church-at-one time and had gone
to the P. E. I. charge from here.
His daughter had started to work
at Eston's prior to his departure.
She had always lived at home pre-
vious to this. the witness said. She

lacked official French certificates
of good conduct, 13 American col-
lege girls-'12 from smith College
and one from Barnard-and several
other Americans today were refus-
ed pennlssion to enter France.
The French Consul. in a manner
which the girls said "irritated"
them. informed tiie' students that
if they want visas they must cable
at their own expense to French
consuls in their home districts for
the certificates.
“I am doing you a favor by ev-
en seeing you personally,’ the young
women students quoted the Consul
Manuel Neville, as saying. "This
matter of visas is lmposs'hle with-
' out certificates.”
The young women, who have
been visiting here and taking A
short course at the University of
Madrid, appealed to Curtis Jordan,
United States Consul, who said he
would wiite to Paris for fur.her
information.

. MATANE, Que., May 17. - Stuck
fast on jutting rocks in the St. Law-
rence River off Ste Fellcite, a village
10 miles east of Metane, the collier
"Kingswood" bound for Montreal
was in a precarious position tonight
with all hands at the pumps.
Feeling her way carefully through
a dense fog and further hindered by
a heavy downpour of rain, the col-
lier struck a chain of ragged rocks
which reaches about one mile out to
sea from Ste. Fellclte.
Directly after the accident the
captain of the collier messaged his
agents at Quebec, the Canadian Im-
port Company, asking a tug be sent
to the scene as soon as possible.
The vesse1's bottom was severely
damaged and was taking water in
her fore hole.
Lats today the tug "Lord Strath-
cona" steamed out of Quebec to go
to the rescue of the distressed vessel.
The Kingswood left Port Talbot.
England. on May 2 with a shipment
of coal for Montreal. She is a vessel
of a register of 5.034 tons and is 405
feet long by 53 wide. Her beam is
26 feet. She is owned by the Joseph
Constantine Steamship Line, Limi-
ted, of Mlddlesborough-on-Tees, and
was built in 1929 at Newcastle.

GLAGE BAY, N. S., May 17. -
Amalgamated mine workers' unions
throughout the Nova Scotia coal-
flelds were holding special meetings
tonight to consider the call for a
general strike tomorrow morning.
The call came from No. 1-B local,
members of which walked out of the
big colliery Tuesday in protest a.-
gninst suspension of it miner whose
carelessness was said by officials to
have caused the death of a horse
and endangered lives of three iniii-
ers.
Will Remain On Job
Whatever decision is reached by
A. M. W. locam, most of the colller-
ies will continue production because
the rival and more numerous United
Mine Workers, not in sympathy with
the strike, will ignore the call.
U. M. W. members and a number
from the A. M. W. continued work
in No. 1-B as usual and although
strikers picketed the district there
was no interference. Fifteen A. M.
W. men rejoined the working force
in No. 1~B today, and 345 miners
went below.
New Development
A new development regarded here
as significant was reported from
Stellarton, where the U. M. W. local
posted notices that unless A. M. W.
nien transferred to their union they
would not work with them after
June 21. `
4 U. M. W. members there far out-
number the A. M. W. and it was
with the U. M, W. that recelver-li-
quidators of the Acadia Coal Com-
pany reached an agreement recently
whereby its three coilierics in Pictou
County were reopened May 14 after
having been closed since March 1.
U. M. W. members in employ of
the Acadia Company are .said to
number about 1,000 while the A. M.
W. have been estimated at some.

States for causing a breakdown of
embargo negotiations a year ago be-

Before the embargo proposal was
made, the council had cut. short an
address begun by Ramon Caballero
De Bedoya, of Paraguay, in which
he defended his country’s attitude
and criticized the report of the Lca-
gue’s chaco commission. recommend-
ing an embargo if arbitration is not
accepted.

GENEVA, May 17.-Led by Great Britain, seven na-
tions today lined up in a movement to end the chaco war byj
an embargo on arms and ammunition and called upon the
rest of the world-particularly the United States and Cen-
tral and South American countries-io join them.
Support of the British project to shui. off supplies of
war from Bolivia and Paraguay by the United States was
an effective embargo, and in-
terest centr_ed in the eventual attitude of Washington.
Hugh R. Wilson, United States minister and observer at the
League of Nations Council, where the proposal was made,
promised to ask for instructions. ‘
