-The death occurred at her home
ill Ellcrslie on Saturday last of Mrs.
,Wm. Hayes, an old and highly re-
spected resident of that place. De-
ceased was 72 years of age and had
been in poor health for the past two
months. Besides a husband the-rc are
left to mourn five sons and three
daughters. The sons aret Robert and
Harry, in St. John, N. B.; Wm. B.
and Clidord, in Ellerslie. and anoth-
er son residing in Western Canada.
The daughters are Mrs. Clements and
Mrs. Affleck, both residing in Western
Canada, and Maud, vice-principal of
the Summcrside High School.-S.

'_1 Court for the fifth circuit of Prince
' opened in Summerside on Friday last
and continued nearly all day Satur-
day, Judge McLeod presiding. There
was n fairly large number of cases
on the docket. The case of Joscph
Read & Co. vs. W. A. Brennan,
which has been before the Court for
the past eighteen months, being
-postponed_from term to term, came
up for hearing at' this term and re-
sulted in the plaintiff being non-
suited on account oi the partnership
_not being registered prior to the is

side, had the misfortune to meet with
a serious accident on Saturday morn-

in Siimmerside at 5 p. m. on Mon-

-With the approach of spring a-
inong those \vho are engaged in the
lobster industry in Prince Courty,
chiefly on the North side whore the
season opens on the 20th April, there
is much activity in preparing for the
seasons pack. There will be no great
,increase in the number of traps over
previous years, owing no doubt, to
‘the new regulations which call for a
much larger space between the laths
'inf the traps and larger netting. Sev-
eral-of the canneries will be under
new management this ycur. Some of
the smaller ones have been bought up
by the larger ones while many others
have changed hands entirely. Charles
Vieno who operated a cannei‘y at Sea
Cow Pond has sold out to W. R.
Loggie, M. P., of Loggieville, N. B.
The some party has bought out Char-
les Bennett at North Cape. Mr. Ben-
nett has been in the lobster business
since early in life having started at

-The funeral of the late Mrs Wm.
Crockett took place on Saturday last
from her late residence North Carle-
ton to the Kirk Cemetery, Cape Tra-
verse, and wasyery highly attended,
there being upwards of a. hundred in
the procession. Services at the house
and grave were conducted by the Rev
.Fumes McDougall. The pall bearers
were Charles Wrigh-t, John Crockett,

ALBANY, N. Y., March 23.-What
is regarded as the death knell of wo-
man suffrnge for 1911 was sounded
in secret session of the Senate Judi-
ciary Committee yesterday after-
noon, when both Newcomb resolu-
sioiis, striking the \vord "male"
from the suffrage clause of the con-
stitution, were ordered shelved for
‘the session by ai vote of eight to
three. lt is known that Senator
Newcomb, who was not present, tele-
graphed an aiiirmative vote and it is
,understood that Senator Bayne also
voted in favor. _Senator Fiero said
before the meeting he would be in
favor of reporting the resolutions.
There still remains the Stilwell
resolution, which was introduced at
the instance of the State Suffrage
Association, and the Assembly Ju-
dicinry Committee has as yet had
no action on the suffrage resolutions.
But the decisive vote in the Senate
Judiciary Committee would indicate
thai. it will be iiiipossible to get the
question of women suffrage before
