A registry office for Prince County and the Gerrymauder for Kings—this is Peter- aonmian justice = ——— eee Exception Taken. Sin, —The report of the Chief Superin- tendent of Edueatior§ for 1892 has just resched here. Ona the geport asa whole, | do not intend to make any commont. To meé statement, however, I wish to take ‘KCeption publicly. On page 73, the chief in referring to the school department in Summerside, presided over by Mr. Neil Macleod, says: ** Mr. Macleod stands at the head of the profes- sion in our Province. The work in his de- partment was far in advance of any other in the Province ” In jastice to Principal Macleod, the Sup- erintendent himself, the teachers and the public, the report should contain facte to show cause for the statement. Nothirg of this, however, is seen. I do no not wish in any way to disparage the character of the work done by Principal Macleod, but a statement publicly made, which ig calcu lated to prejudice the public im favor of tkat gentleman, and uaduly exalt him at he expeose of the great majority of our teachers, demands notice at least as public se that given by our chief to Mr. Macleod. in the first plice, I go 20 far as to ques- tio the chief's right, without questioning vis —to draw the invidious compar- ison he has drawn. The report gives 447 ss the number of schoolain the Province. How many of these did our chief visit ? Probably not more than ten or twelve. inspection was absolutely imperative even to mitigate the offense of placing Mr. Macleod ** at the head of the profession in uur Province.” But Superintendent Mac- leod did visit Principal Macleod's depart- ment, and heard a few advanced pupils read new editions of old authors. Dazed with the beauties of the ancient cl»ssics— Horsce’s odes and Virgil’s A®neid —our chief is vompletely carried away, and be® side himself, publicly expresses his admira- tion, and sets to the work his imprimatur in just recognition of the valuable services sodered to this Province by Prir cipal MacLeod—forgetting that it is the teacher who faithfaily laying the foundation in whatis regarded by many asthe drudgery f echool life, enables him who is in a more ouspicuous position to set successfully ihe nead corner-stone. But no recognition 1 taken or prominence given to the mure uuble toiler. But facts are against the chief's statement. Tsking the calendar « f he Prince of Wales College for 18923 as ny authority, I find that of the students sttending that institution, one is from Sum- mer-ide, two from Georgetown, four from Panstatinage, six from Souris, and thirty- three from Charlottetown. The medalists ot the Prince vf Wales College since 1877, sre Summerside, two; Valleyfield, two; Alberry Plains, three; Marshfield, three; Georgetown, four and Charlottetown thir- een. This, I think, speaks something for he foundation laid by those teachers from whom these studerits have come, Facts, I repest, are against the chief's statement. These figures tell the tale, and yet, forsooth, the public are told that Principal Macleod is king among the braves! Pahaw! Many of our teachers, I believe, if placed in positions similar to hatof Mr. MacLeod’s, would, judging from known results, prove to be at least that gentlemau’s peers. i might proceed to adduce further dis- proof of the chief's gasertion, and might s!a0 convey a hint as to the motives which influenced him in this matter, but the reader will, mo doubt, regard what has been fered as ‘* quantum suff.” Peter Gixzs.
