Beer, Esq. The morning gave promive of a lovely afternoup, and al- though an unexpected shower of ran, which lasted bata few minutes cast a gloom over the youthful hearts of the pupils, their childish antic) ations were fully realized in a “high old” tme. All the necessaries in connection with a picnic of this kind were benignly furnish- ed by the parents and friends of the child- ren, who seem totake a lively interest in both pupils and teacher. This should be fo-tered in every school district where the love of school and s cial training is sought for. An excellent programme of athletic games was rendered with ex ili- rating appreciation of both pupils and others in attendance, showing by their prompt and active execution on the part of the pupils the close and careful trate- ing Of those happy little ones, which no doubt ought to reflect a dazzling ray of credit on their kind and endearing teacher Mr. J. H For the satisfaction of the inner the epicurean could not have desired a better stocked table than what was spreat by the pastry trained and beautiful ladies of South Melville. A saloon stocked with temperate and refreshing drinks, presided over by com- petent hand-, was in connection with the above. There was also a danemg booth where the light fantastic toe kept time to the soul inspiring strains of the melodious violin which poured forth its strains, to be wafted over the verdant hills and bowery woodlands of the South Melville plains. But the event of the day was the speech of John J. Bradley, Esq. \ At the urgent request of the committee, Mr. Bradley, one of the school officers, and one of the ino-t prominent and influential gentlemen of the place, ascended the stand, and, al though taken by surprise, held the closest a‘tention of the crowd for over half an hour. Mr. Bradiey began by referring to the advantages afforded the pupils of the pres-nt day, when compared with those of his day, aad w ~ ‘oud in his prei-e of any enteetainment or picnic, such as the present one, for the amusement of the Monaghan. Thea little one. He took advantage of the to thank the ladies and all who kal charge of the picnic’ and especially Messrs. Cutcliffe, Monaghan, and McFarlane, who bad charge of the saloon, and who did all their business well that everybody was well treated, and no one had too much. He concluded amidst hearty cheers. Evening dropped her curtains in the west and the dewy shades of night wre fa-t approaching when the choral band, with thankful hearts and joyial glee, chanted ‘Auld Lang Syne” and “God Save the Queen,” as they dispersed amid the cloud ascending cheers of many a_ jolly sont. It is pleasing to note that Miss Lottie Deacon has obtained her admission to the Prince of Wales College. Upon inquiry it was found that the report of her failure in arithmetic was incorrect. Great care ~hould be exercised in the choosing of the examiners. The new dwelling house of Mr. Richard Vessey is just about completed. It is built after the Jatest American style, and is a model of beauty and convenience. Harvesting in this vicinity has fairly begun. Farmers say that the oat crop will be moderate. The potato bug is douing its deadly work here as well as else— where, but it does not prove to be such an enemy of the farmer as the horn fly. The barns of Mr. John Gil', which were burned last winter, have been rep'aced by new ones. They have been built with a view to economy snd convenience. +? oe COVEHEAD NOTES. Harvesting in this vicinity has com- menced, and bids fair to be an average crop, notwithstanding the drought. We regret that the roads and bridges in this locality are in such poor repair. This no doubt keeps visitors frotm travelling through our settlement. Mr. Wallace Shaw met with a rather serious accident} n his way, from Brackley Point. A young man driving furiously ran into his buggy, breaking it down and pitching out Mr. Shaw and his wife. Such driving should be stopped. Mr. Chas. McMillan has purchased an improved low down binder which, he claims, will cut down all kinds of grain, damaged or otherwise. He harvested the entire crop of his neighbor, Mrs. McCal- lum, in two days, most of which was very much damaged by the recent storms. Our newly inducted pastor is about pur chasing a very fine horse. He will be better able now to vvercome the difficul- ties of his statior. Mr. Lewis E Shaw, our late teacher, is about to leave us, intending to take up his abode in Waltham, to try his fortune with Uncle Sam. The Prince in the course of the season, dinners at Marlborough House, which, in many essential respects, differ from those which he attends at other peo- ple’s houses. The guests do not num- ber more than 45 people, including the ladies and gentlemen in attendance up- en the Prince and Princess. When members of the royal family arrive at Marlborough house, at the outer gate, the fact is at once signalled from the lodge, so that the Prince and Prin- cess of Wales are never taken by sur- prise, but are in readiness to receive them. The dining room in which the ban- quet is served is a magnificently dec- orated apartment, with a ceiling of white and gold. On the wall on the left side is a great square of red plush to set off the presentations of piate which have been made to their Royal Highnesses during the recent yecrs. The Prince of Wa-es, as host, sits not at the end, but ia the middie seat; ‘at the side of a large and long table. Ta- ble decorations are of a massive, or- nate, and rather heavy chracter. A very high centerpiece is filled with fiowers, and more blossoms are placed in tall vases, resembling specimen glasses. Probably Marlborough house is the onty place in London in which the knives and forks are laid so curiously. To each guest two forks and no more are provided, and these are placed prongs downward, reversing the usual method. In addition there is one large tablespoon and one large knife. In no circumstance are two knives permitted upon the table simultaneously, and for this rule a very strange reason is as- signed. His Royal Highness is very superstitious, and on no account will be incur the risk of having knives crossed inadvertently. The wine glasses are placed, by the by, in a line as straight as a company of soldiers, and the services are simply folded in two. Small water bottles are used, but, apparently, finger bowls are tabooed in Marlborough house. Dinner begins at 8:45 p. m., and last for one hour and ten minutes. Rapid service is insisted upon, yet four or five waiters only are allowed to enter the dining room, which is, however, some distance from the kitchen. Celer- ity and despatch are obtained by the employment of a smal] army of assist- ants stationed behind the scenes. For desert royal blue sevres is used, and when the time has come for coffee and cigars, the custom is once during the year, and only once—the night of the Derby dinner—to hand to each guest a silver lighter of unique design. A strange snake story comes from Harvey County, Kan, It is told op the evidence of two reputable citizens —A. L. Bartlebaugh, a prominent grain buyer of Newton, and J. W. Miller, a Dunkard farmer of Walton, Mr. Mil- ler has lost eight fine cows as the re- sult of the strange freak of a monster bull snake that has fattened from the milk he has sucked from the udders of Mr. Miller’s herd. For several weeks the farmer has noticed that his cows have come up to the barnyard occa- sionally in an excited condition. One of them was invariably without milk, and its bag badly swollen and inflamed. The cow in a few hours would die ap- parently in great agony. Mr. Miller, after losing eight cows, determined to learn the cause of the trouble. One day he noticed that one of the’ cows was racing madly about the pas- ture at a terrible rate and in a state of great excitement, which was soon felt by all of the other cattle in the field. Approaching the cow, Mr. Mil- ler saw a monster bull snake, eight feet in length, hanging to the teat of the pnimal with a grip that. was not to be shaken by the frantic efforts of the thoroughly frightened bovine. As the cow plunged on the snake was rapidly absorbing the milk from the udder. When the last drop had been sucked away the snake dropped off, and Mr. Miller killed it. The body of the mon- ster has been preserved in alcohol and will be donated to the museum of the S3tate University at Lawrence. Since .e killed the snake Mr. Miller has lost no more cows. { AN EASY LESSON. Canada has been a confederacy for twenty-eight years. The Grits have been in power for five years of this period; the Conservatives for twenty-seven? years. There have been ten deficit years, and eighteen surplus years. The Grits had one surplus year (the first year in power) and four deficit years, The Conservatives have had seventeen surplus years and six deficit years, the latter including the period of the North- west rebellion. Iu the aggregate the four Grit deficits were to their single surplus as seven dol- lars to one; the Conservative surpluses were as more than three dollars to one of their deficits.
