ENGLIsH sparrows have been introduced into Alabama, for the purpose of exter-} minating the cotton worm. Sorta is to be the capital of Bulgaria, in- stead of Tirnova—a change made by Rus- sia, of her own motion. I. O. O. F.--All resident and visiting Patriarchs are requested to attend at Odd- fellows Hall this evening, at half-past eight, for rehearsal. Me. Josepa D. Camrseti, Montague River, is cutting 3 acres of hay to-day. This is the second cut of the season and the first that has been tried here. It isa good crop and will pay well. Tne new uniforms for No. 1 Garrison Artillery have arrived. They are consid- ered to be the best ever sent to the Island, and will, no doubt, show off this excellent battalion to good advantage Horne Sviciwe. — Jackson, Mich., Oct. 2.—Jeremiah Donovan, an inmate of the Penitentiary, committed suicide by throwing himself upon a swiftly-revolving fiy-well, which crushed him to jelly. He was a noted burglar, confined on a five years sentence. ALBERT ALLIN, who was, a short time ago remanded for stealing from Mr. Wm. Kennedy’s Confectionary, re-appeared be- fore the Stipendiary Magistrate this morn- ing. It appears that Allin obtained an en- trance to the Confectionary through a win- dow that was broke on the day previous by some parties unknown. There was no evi- dence to show that he broke the window, and he was therefore sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labor. We learn with pleasure, throngh a pri- vate tel m from Grand Greve, Gaspe, that the Hon. Mr. Fortin has just arrived from Magdalen Islands, where his majority will be at least 360. The full returns are not yet in, but there is reason to believe that the Hon. gentleman has received a majority on the mainland as well. We very heartily congratulate the Hon. Mr. Fortin upon his victory, and the county in expressing so markedly the reversal of the snatched judgment so improperly obtained last May. ! Mvcu Neepep.—There has been talk of late to try to manufacture starch from the tato, and sugar from beets on the Island. Yo doubt if the experiment was once en- tered into it would prove a success in the end. We want manufactories here to con- sume what can be raised readily, and keep the young men and ladies from going else- where. We are behind in this Province as to manufacturing many things that we buy elsewhere. Let us ail encourage every new enterprise that may start, however small. ‘‘ Large oaks from very small acorns grow.” Tue steamer Cavyoll arrived at 11.30 on Tuesday night, with a cargo of general mer- chandize and the following passengers : Miss L. He began selling for cash exclusively about three years ago. He now says he would not change back to the old system for anything. It was hard to do at first. He lost some customers, but he gained others, and after a while the people got to know that he meant what he said, and the trouble was over. He lives in an agricultural district; almost all the people around are farmers, and yet they manage to get the cash and come to town to buy goods. His experience is that of hundreds of others in different sections who have changed from the credit to the cash system. Now is a favorable time of the year to make the change. People are beginning to get money.” THERE was a full dock at the Stipendi Magistrate’s Court this forenoon. Patrick McKenna put in an appearance for assaull- ing Officer Hennessy, whils Hennessy was in the act of serving him with a summons for fighting on Saturday night. He was fined for that offence $5 and costs or 14 days; Daniel McDonald and James Con- nolly appeared for being drunk and incap- able on the street, and were each fined $2 and costs or 8 days; Wm. Clish and John ‘Trainor were fined $3 and costs and $4 and costs, respectively, for a like offence; Ed- ward Butler, for being drunk and _ continu- ally disturbing his mother’s household, was lectured and fined $2 and costs or 8 days; Patrick McKenna, John Gormley, Michael Dooly and Michael Began, were summoned for being engaged in a ‘‘set-to” on Pownal street, on Saturday night at 11 o'clock. The three first named appeared, and the evidence taken showing that McKenna and were the parties actually engaged in the disturbance, and that Dooly and Gor- mely tried to quell the affray, McKenna and Began were each fined $4 and costs or 20 days, and Dooly and Gormley were ac- quitted. Albert Allin, for larceny from the store of Wm. Kennedy, was sentenced to — months’ imprisonment with hard la- T, NEWS BY TELEGRAPH, Orrawa, Oct. 7. The Governor-General arrived here to- day from Quebec by special train. He has had apartments fitted up for him in the main Parliamentary buildings. He has forced the resignation of the Ministry, which has been unaccountably postponed. He is booked to leave next Saturday from Quebec. Sir John will have his own convenience, and is not to be pressed. It will take him at least ten days to form his Ministry. The delay of McKenzie is unaccountable, and proves that he can do nothing with grace. The resignation is fixed for to-morrow morning. McKenzie has shown no mag- nanimity in the whole business. He has been forced to it at last. The question of appointments is kept in mystery up to the last moment. All sorts of rumors are afloat. Richards. who will be absent till May, is said to resign, and Ritchie takes his place. Scott, of the Min- istry, will be promoted to the Supreme Court Bench. Taschereau resigns, and Laflamme takes his place. If so, all the nominations will certainly be cancelled. Dr. Tupper is in consultation with Sir John at Toronto. Orrawa, Oct. 8. No extra of the Gazette has been issued. A large number of appointments have been made. W. Buckingham, Premier’s Secretary, is made Deputy Minister of Interior. Judge Taschereau, Judge of Kamour- aska District, is made a Supreme Court Judge. Other appointments have been made, but not authoratively announced. Mr. Jones leaves for Halifax to-morrow. Montreal, Oct. 7. Hanlan has gone to Ottawa for a recep- tion. In the re-count, Laflamme is reduced to 5 votes, with 4 polls to hear from. This election kills him ; not only will he not be a minister, but not even a member of Par- liament. A grand dinner to Hon. Mr. Chapleau was given in Hochelaga to-night. The Grand Jury brought in a true bill against the Orangemen, who are to stand their trial before the Queen’s Bench. There is much excitement over this first step in the prosecution. +-<Do a» -—— Count Von Moltke, the great German General, whose serious illness is announced, is seventy-eight years of age. —_ 2+ <> --< Special Notices '7,000 feet of Iron Pipe and 13 dozen Iron Force Pumps for Tubelar Wells, re- ceived per American steamer.
