To-day Hanlan’s friends let out a reef in the betting, and finding no more money forthcoming at 2 to 1 on their champion, laid 10 to 4, at'which figures several heavy transactions took place. Both men are in the very finest condition, and in spite of the one-sidedness of the betting a great race is expected. LElliott’s confidence in his own his own powers is not shaken in the least, and he has many strong friends who pro- fess to believe he will come through all right. Thisa. m. the weather was fine, but a tolerably stiff breeze blew, ruffling the water and making it decidedly rough. Hanlan was out but contented himself with doing a mile and a half at an easy rate. Elliot did twice that distance. In the p. m. the wind had gone dewn and the water was in good condition. The Canadian travelled fully nine miles, at times putting in some magnificent work, to the admiration of the people on the banks, who applauded loudly as he bent to his oars. Elliott rowed four miles without a break, at the top of his speed, highly pleasing his sup- porters. . The race will take place about noon, and the result will be known in Toronto be- tween 7.and 8 in the morning of the same day. Lonpon, June 12. The match sculling championship _be- tween Hanlan and Elliott next Monday, 90 to 40 on Hanlan is freely offered, while 5 to 2 is wanted.
