Dear Sir,—I donot wish to return to Montreal without expressing my gratitude to you for the very excellent Bell Piano that you placed at my dispogal for my recital, I have tried many Canadian Pianos of different manufac- turers,nd must say that, con- sidering the size of the instru- ment, J have never found one to equal it for depth and bril- liancy of tone, The action is quite as elastic and respons- ive as in American Upright Pianos of the highest grade. Again thanking you, very sincerely, I remain, Yours, Frep. E. Mornis P. E. Island Agency, U.P. Mil Opera House Building ~ C. P. Yeo Agent at Summerside. The Advocate of the Rats, According to the historian De Thou, ! Chasseneuz himself first became famous through the skill with which he adyo- cated the cause of the rats of Autun. They had been summoned to appear be- fore the bishop's proctor and show cause why they should not be excommunicat- ed. Chasseneuz was appointed to de- fend them and began by demanding that the summons should be read in ey- ery parish, since the rats were widely scattered and might otherwise not hear of it. He next excused their nonappear- ance by saying that the roads were dan- gerous for his clients, seeing that cats were everywhere lying in wait for them, and finally, having exhausted all modes of delay, he made an eloquent speech on the injustice of proceeding against the whole number at once and demand- ed that each rat should be tried sepa- rately. This speech, says the historian, was recalled to his memory by the Waldensians when, as president of the parlement of Provence, he was obliged to take part in the persecution of those unfortunate sectaries.—Cornhill Mag- Stage Tragedies. One of the dramatic little stories of Mr. F. Frankfort Moore, the London novelist, turns an the actual stabbing of a Juliet by a jealous Romeo during a performance in a German court theater. Such tragic incidents have not infre- quently occurred in the annals of opera and playhouse. In our own city’s chief lyric theater last season we had what seemed the lively comedy of an actor something leading up to his sudden death, when the unfortunate Castle- mary, as Sir Tristan Mickleford, was pursued by the crowd of Richmondfair folk in ‘‘Martha.’’ There are at least a dozen well attested suicides that have been consummated by luckless actors ox singers uncer cover of the tragic move- ment of their part. A more recent ex- ample occurred at the theater in Arad, Hungary, wken a well known leading member of the company, Koloman Bal- la, put a real and loaded revolver to his forehead in cencluding the last act of the night’s drama. He fell dead, amid an immense demoustration of applause from a crowded house quite unaware of the reality of the actor’s emotion and gestures. He was a man of excellent family and bright in professional pros- pects, disappointed in love, morbid, and, as he grimly wrote to a friend, ‘‘determined to end his days asan actor ought to do—to the satisfaction of his public. ’’—Harper’s Weekly. Malfpenny Dinners. Near to Whitechapel church, London, is a shop where a dinner can be pro- eured for a halfpenuy. The ‘‘halfpenny dinner’’ is not served up in the shape of a cut from the joint and two vegeta- bles. It is a big brown ‘‘pie,’’ very juicy and very hot. The absence of beefsteak is evident when you bite the pie, but you find inside a good sprin- kling of onions, carrots and sheep’s liver, with a plentiful supply of gravy. Be- tween the hours of 12 and 2 the poor and hungry from all parts of the cast end flock to this shop. There are shoe- blacks, penny toy men, costers and clerks ‘‘out of collar.’’—London Stand- ard. The Nerves, Piercing the flesh with even the finest needle hurts, because the nerves are so thickly matted just under the skin that not even tha finest poiut can be intro- duced withoat woundinz one or more. Paine’s Celery Compound Gives New Life and Health te a Yung Lagy, Another Proot of the Life- viving Virtues of the Great Medicine. Too many women have an apparent disregard of the principle that pertain .o good bealth and true womanhood. The pains, aches and tired feelings of today are treated lightly, and often viewed with au utter indifferencer When weakeness, sieepiesspesa, nervousness, debility, con- stipation, headoches and prostration are doing their terrib!e work in the destruction of nerve power and breaking up the physical system, many women only apply themselves to barder work and plunge more deeply into society pleasures 80 as to diown all thoughts of trouble. Tue following letter from Miss Blake, Euston Street, Hamilton, Ont., saved at the aleveanth hour by Puine’s Celery Com= pound, fully provesthat the great medi~- cine is truly a life-giver: “ For years I suifered greatly, and was under the care ef doctors whofinally told me I was going into consumption. I was becoming worse through the use of mepicines’ and I gave up my doctors. While in a very critical condition, not able to sit up or rest, always faint and weak, arpetite and digestion bad, and my system run down and little life left in me, I commenced to use Pain’s Celery Com- pound. Afterteking one boitle I feit mucb relieved. I have used in all seven or e ght bottles, and am now anew woman, can enjoy life, and am as well as I wish to be.
