This occurred on going into committee of the whole on Canadian National Railway bilil, thirteen irl all. Bill No. 43, the ilrst on the list, deals with the construction of a. lille from s point on the Murray Harbour Branch to a point on the Georgetown subdivision. The Hon. Mr. Bennett took occa- sion to ask if any ef-fort had been made to provide for the uniform 831180 of all the lines on the Island. The fact that farmers have to un- load their cars and reload their con- tents into other cars is practically prohibitive in respect of potatoes. All lines on the Island should be made uniform to prevent great inconven- ience and expense. The Hon. Mr. Dunning replied that the Murray Harbor Branch was the last to 'be standardized and the pre- sent measure was for the purpose of facilitating tl-lat. It would obviate the immediate necessity of building a somewhat expensive standard gauge heavy bridge over the Hills- borough river. The existing bridge would remain in duty, but for light trailic only. 'I'he use of the branch line proposed would enable the stand- ardiziifftifflif-the whole oi the remain- ing lines. There would, it was ex- plained, be no narrow cause loft when the terminal work at Char- lottetown is completed. N01' T0 BE REBUILT AT PRE- SENT The I-lon. Mr. MacDonald, iKlnS`5> asked lg lf, were the intention of the department. to rebuild Hil1sborou8l”l bridge. and Mr. Dunning replied llml' me management dia not propose i° rebuild the 1-rillsberuugn undue lt present, but to standardize the whole of the Murray Harbor branch, using the Hlllsborougli br-idK€ l°l' light traf- fic and the line new being provided for heavy trafflt. Mr. MacDonald explained that one reason for asking the question was chat an article appeared in the Island Patriot, the organ or the I-ibliml party obviously inspired by two Lib- eral members and Pl‘°P9I‘lY i”¢8lm`l€~'l u m omcisl statement, in which the present scheme was outlined and in whlelr the positive statement was mode thot this bridle was to be re- built. Zion Uhilrtth Hill Tll¢l'G WM a further statement made by the representative of Queenb C°Ul\¢Y at a meeting of the Board or Trade held in Charlottetown a few days ago. In large headlines the re- port of this meeting is thus intro- dU¢¢_dZ "Will standardize southern railway and rebuild bridge." “This announcement made at Board oi Trade meeting on Thursday by Hon. J. E. Sinclair and Mr. R.. H. Jenkins, M. P." The report describes what took place at the meeting me this statement appears. “It was announc- ed among other things: (1) That, Messrs Sinclair and Jenkins would Dress hard to gel, an amount il-l the supplementary estimates for the hotel this year. if not, next year. (2) Tllut the Hillsborough Bridge is to be re- built." This statement varied considerably from that made by the Minister and was also at variance with°the outlllle of the plan proposed in the railway committee, and Mr. MacDonald add- ed: "It is very important in conne.-- tion with a large section of country in Prince Edward Island that this bridge should be rebuilt and natur- ally the whole province is looking fo.-_ wardto the undertaking. I hope that the statements of the representatives of »Queen’s County in the Patriot are correct, that these honorable gentle- men have been informed, after con- sultation with the authorities that the bridge is to be rebuilt. I shall be glad to learn that the Minister 1:; mistaken in the matter." ` The Minister of Railways was not very specific in his reply, repeating practically his previous statement as lar as it went. Mr. MacDonald thought the Minister was confused about the situation. but it did not account for the statement made by the Patriot and purporting to coin: from the I-ion. J. E. Sinclair and Mr. Jenkins, that the bridge was to be rebuilt, followed by the statement made by the newspaper on its own authority that they took up the mat-_ ter with the authorities at Ottawa and were assured that the bridse uoula be rebuilt. He pointed out 1° the Minister that rebuilding the bridge was quite diflerent from stand- ardizing it. V MISLEADIN G The l-lon. Mr. Sinclair stated that there was nothing in the article quoted from to support the headlines. The manner in which newspapers may wlgllgo headline articles is their own bxulness and nobody else is resP0l\' sible. Mr. MacDonald understood from the Hon. Mr. Sinclair that he rcplitl- iated the headlines in his ovm news- paper. Mr. Sinclair asked "What news- paper is that?" Mr. Maollonsld: "That is the Pat- riot of Msn-h 30. 1929 and Mr. Sin- clair and Mr. Jenkins were both in onerlellewvm ut that lime. Then they say that one oi the facts-is that the Hillsborough bridge is to ue ru-' built. - Mr. Bennett; asked if it were true as stated in the article, that bridge was to be rebuilt, and the Minister stated that no doubt lt would have tg be rebuilt. lvilcrcllllon Mr. MacDonald said: “If it. will ilave to be rebuilt, I do not see any rea- son why the Minister should not say so." The article went by saying th-at this is to be an alternative for the rebuilding of the Hillsborough brlcigc. To this Mr. Dunning replied that, --It is an alternative for the lvrostflt rebuilding of the Hillsborough bridge."
