JOHN McLEAN & SON. dec6—dy & wky STORY OF WOLSELEY, The Commander-ia-Chicf Shows a Lat Postmaster ilow to Work, To illustrate some of the disagreeabl. things which the solders suffered in the Soudan, Mr. Nourse telis the fol- jowing anecdote of the postal service, which also well shows how democra- tic was Lord Wolseley, the comman- dant. Nourse went to the post-office at Korti to look for some leters. The pustmaster Was a native and not vers much at handwiiting, and said th chere was nothing for him, after superficial glance at a big pile vo papers and letters. sNourse asked to see the pile q@ It tuis, and while he was looking the vver a man with nothing to des'srat 1's rank came into the office in com peny with another He took in th &) vation at a glance and said: “Let: clean this thing out.” Whereupo? ihey jumped over the counter anc bundled the postmaster out, neck anc ivels. Then they began the examin: - ton of the office and found it con gested with mail for the army. They searched every nook an cranny and threw the letters fer on resiment into one corner, those fo another into another, with all the news reapers in the certre of the floor. Ther they went through each pile an e>parated it int» companies, and be fore night every letter in camp wa: distributed and the next day th papers were out. Nourse at the tim: did not know the good deed was. name, and his answer was: ‘“The) call me Charley."” Some time after- ward Nourse was roing to see the com mandant, and sitting near his tent sav his companion ac the post-office. “Hello, Charle;,” he said, “I’m lcok Inge for the com-nandant; where’! find him ’”” who his companion th He asked him Pb’: “Well,” said ‘< harley,’”” “you won’ have to look far. Scme pigeons -ieal straw and othe: building materia’s from dove cotes The thieving pigeons have been observ- ed to be shiftless birds, bad fiyers and cairiers. They showed the princip chgracteristics cf human thieves—dis- inclination to work Cases of theft have at times been remarked among temale dogs, but such cases aer almost always _ influenced by material love. Certain dogs which when in a normet condition, are very well behaved an respect their mast- ers’ property, be-,-n to steal when they have puppies, ant they steal anything that the latter will eat. Nor is murder vanting among an!- mals; that is to say, not murder such as is caused by the exigencies of the struggle for life; but murder commit- tel under the in4uence of induvidu } malice or passion. It would be absard to declare that the hawk which kil: a swallow is a criminal, for he is on! fighting out hi struggle for exist- ence, but, on the other hand, animals which kill others of their own specie are guilty of a tiue criminal act when they do so for ay other reason than that of self-defcnce. Thus Karl Vogt, the celebrated Ger- man naturalist, has observed a couple of storks that hed for several years built their nest in a village near Sa- Anim. lette. One day it was noticed tkat, when the male was out in search of fcod, another vounger bird began to court the female. At first he was re- pulsed, then tolevated and welcomed; at last, one morning, the two birds flew away to the field where the his- band, was hunting for frogs, and killed him. According to Brekm. siorks often murder the members of t):=+ flock which either refuse to fol- low them at the time of migration or are not able to do so. : An Electric Hen, The business of hatching chickens by artificial means is catried on so ex- tensively that any improvement in the apparatus or methods is certain to at- tiact the attention of all poultry rais- ers, says an exchange. The latest in- vention in this line is an electric ap- paratus. It is said that in this !n- vention the temperature can be ad- ju: ted and maintained to a fraction oi ihe desired pitch. The walls of th: incubator are filled in with minere! wool. There is a hot-water tank at the top which keeps up the proper tem- perature by circulation. In these elec- tric hens, as they are called, a resist- ance box may be used to heat the water, but they are made so that either cil, gas or electricity may be used, The idea of hatching chickens by elec tricity explodes the old theory that a>: electric current add‘ed the eggs. Th’'s notion went out of fashion a long time ago, with many other things to which cur ancestors clung with the utmost tenacity. It is thought that chick: raised in electric incubators have more strength and vitality than when brought out in the ordinary way. Sev- eral poultrymen are exp?rimentinge with electric broodcers, and the results will be looked for with great interest. Town Fall of Kelations, It is stated as an actual fact that all the people residing in Letcher County, Kentucky, are related to one another, Girectly or indirectly. The oldest member of the family, Lettie, is 82 years old and has twenty children, ninety-five grard- children and fifty great-grandchildren, Polly, aged 80, has sixteen children and almost as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Lettie.
