CAMPAIGN A(`L-\INST IUBERCULOSIS.
A largely attended and most im-
portant meeting was held in St. John
3, few days agQ.iu_fu_rtherance of the
campaign against tuberculosis. Lieu-
.icnant Governor McClelan presided,
and among those present were Premier
Emmerson, Chief Justice Tuck and
many prominent politicians, lawyers,
doctors and business men. Dr. Wil-
liam Bayard, the head of the medical
profession in New Brunswick read an
able and lucid paper rn tuberculosis
mul the methods of preventing its
ravages..
Dr.Bay ard showed that tuberculosis
is not inherited but is caused by a.
germ which produces disease in various
parts of the body. The disease, if it

The meeting strongly approved
of the action of the Provincial
Boardof Health in taking measures

of the meeting a letter was read from T
Mr. Joseph Allison subscribing $500 .
towards establishing a. sanitarium for

line of the movement now taking
shape in New Brunswick to check
the ravages of tuberculosis, and we
trust that it may be followed by a
similar movement in P. E. Island.

which resulted in bringing the Laurier
government into power, The Liberal
journals are now rf calling that event
with pardouable satisfaczion, and do
not fail to tell their readers how pros-
perous the country is under the new
regime.
The Canadian Militia Department
is to he congratulated upon having
abolished the canteens in connection
with the military camps of instruc-
tion- Both the Minister of Militia
and Major General Hutton
are understood to have been quite
in agreement as to this measure
and are to be commended accordingly.
The canteen was a sad temptation to
the citizen soldieiy during their brief
terms of camp life. The extinction
of drinking habits is gradually be-
coming a reality in the regular army,
and experience has shown that a tem-
perate soldfery can better preserve
their health,endure greater hardships
and if recessary can fight more suc-
cessfvlly than those who use ,liquid
stimulants.

day's issue we wrote that “George III
reigned from 1760 till 1820,” and that
he became insane in 1811. The com-
positor mixed up these dates and
failed to make the necessary correc-
tions when marked in the proof
sheets. The esteemed Patriot__founds
an article on this purely typographical
error. which was quite apparmit to
every intelligent reader. That is how-
ever g a small matter. The Patriot
proceeds to say: “Queen Victoriafs
reign,-if we mistake not, is not' the
the exception ot George III.” Passing
over the peculiar construction of 'the
