than a quarter of an hour after he had
remarked to the steward that he was
-going into the hold to sec that every-
thing was all right Harry Anderson,
of Wilmington, Del., a deckhand on
board the..bnrge Maurice R. Shaw,
lying in Canton, Howllow, laden with
guano, was suflocated in the hold of
the vessel by the sulphuric acid fllmes
from the fertilizer.
Captain William B. Clarke, of the
barge, narrowly escaped the Bama
fate when be went into the hold to
rescue Anderson. He was taken from
the hold unconscious, and after re-
ceiving restoratives soon revived.
Captain Clarke just managed to
fasten ropes under the arms of An-
derson’s body when he was seen to
fall face downward. ‘ ,_
