Partner Rarely Told oi, Business WINNIFBG. Dec. lI-John A. Maohray and his accountant, the late R. H. Shanks, were entirely responsible for “extensive, reckless speculation," by the investment firm of Machray and Sharpe, Fred J. Sharpe declared today. Partner in the firm, forced into bankruptcy last summer with losses of 83,000,000 to creditors, Sharpe told a board of inquiry that during the last 25 years he was seldom consulted or advised oi business transactions entered into by his company, ' Perusing a list of transactions ex- tending over almost a quarter cen- tury, Sharpe said he knew nothing about 90 per cent. of them; and was surprised to learn shares of certain syndicates were in his name. Cheques for payments of taxes, div- idends of interest on certain of these syndicates were signed by him, witness admitted, but he mere- ly signed when asked to ‘w the ac- countant who, he said, nao com- plete control of the books. Shanks, witness declared, also was responsible for "about half oi the smaller transactions" entered into by the firm. The accountant would simply enter these without authority from anyone, Sharpe said, thoush “he shouldn't have done it.’ Hack in 1907 when Mechray and Sharpe were "on cordial terms" wit- ness said he took an active interest in investments but as the years passed and Machray become associ- ated with others, Sharpe was sel- dom consulted in this respect. Often he had refused to "go into these extensive reckless speculations" and wamed Machray against it. The business was very profitable in the “boom" days before the war, witness said , and about 1912 he estimated his equity at about $200,- 000. _ Machrayk, he said, would amount to very much more. NEW YORK, Dec. 16.—A senti- mental air pervades the department of street lighting these days, for it is getting ready to perform a solemn rltc,‘a little ceremony that goes only with the advent, of a new mayor. install a pair of lamps in front of the house at 253 W. 105th street as soon as its occupant, John P. O'- Brien, is sworn in as mayor. In ac- cordanco with hoary tradition, they are tollelp the mayor find his way home at night and to guide the steps of after-dark visitors. No lamps were set up in front of the home _of acting Mayor Joseph V. McKee, because he happened to live in an apartment house which already had very satisfactory lamps outside. The custom goes back to the days of early Dutch settlers, before New York ever had a. mayor and long before any attempt had been made at street lighting. It was the habit then of the burgomasler to spend the evening in a tavern where he could discuss affairs of state be- tween sips of ale. When he went home he would be escorted through the streets by a pair of lantern bearers. These dig- nitaries, after seeing him safely through the door. would hang their lanterns outside as a warning to re- velers that His Honor had retired and wished to be left in peace. On the occasion of an evening at home the lanterns would be hung outside as a beacon to those who sought an audience with his honor. Although modern New Yorkers have a difficult time if they set out to find the home of their chief ex- ecutive with only s pair of lamps to go by, the custom has perished.
