Hazing at Princeton FRESHMAN ALEXANDER OF NEW YORK PUT TO BED MANY TIMES—PRESIDENT M’COSH DISCOURSES ONE DAY TOO LATE ON THE EVILS OF RUSHING — THE} FACULTY EXPEL FOUR OF THE HAZ-| ING SOPHOMORE’s | Princeton, Sept 23.—When the 132| innocent freshmen who are Dr. Mc-! Cosh’s latest pride, woke up from their} fiist dreams of cannibal sophomores on last Thursday morning they found various things about the campus, in- cluding the old cannon painted green, as an indication of what the sopho- mores thoughtof them. As soon as the freshmen had got settled the sopiio- mores bad called on them formally. Young Alexander of New York, whose father is a trustee, was one of those whom the sophomores thus honored. “You won’t do anything to me,” he said, when a dozen sophomores told him how pretty he looked, “because my father isa trustee.” The sophomores did not love him a bit more because be was so naughtly and rebellious toward them, and so they put him to bed five times on Saturday night and foyr times on Suoday. He had to spend almost all of the Sabbath, when he wasn’t to church or chapel, puttiog on and taking off his apparel at the biddiog of the kindly disposed sophomores, who waut- ed to make sure that he had learned how to dress himself before he left home. Another yéuthful freshman was studying hard when his sophomore perceptors made their first formal call onhim. They made him write the following note: Dear Faruer:—lI have just returned from prayer meeting, and am now playing cards and throwing dice Lhope you are dving the same. Lovingly. Your Son The sophomores took the note and mailed it home, where the young mao’s father is probably wondering about the sudden changes of college life. One freshman was accused of having unclean feet, and the sepho- mores made him use bis hair brush as a flesh brush, and, perched on his table, he was made to scrub them until they attained « pearly whiteness, The faculity did not like these and other manifestations of fatherly kind- bess On the part of the sophomores, and Proctor Goivdie especially dis- pleased. He found out the names of about ten of the most painstaking sophomores and waroed them that they must step or be expelled. The was rest of the class signed a guarantee petition thac they would stop hazing, aud everything would have been peace- fulifithad no: béen for the upper classmen. They invited the freshmen who on Friday night had a rash around the bie ecapoon on which the paint [was stillgreon and sticky. Proctor Goldie tried to interfere, but there were too many students for him, and he was knocked down and trampod on in the tasse. The seniors und =the juniors liver‘ed the aitentioa of the faeuity by getting up &sham rush ia another partof the compus. Two or ibree sophomores had their ankles twisted, and «a freshman had his shoulder sprained, bat nobody was mach hurt. Presideot McUosh went into the fresi- men class rooms before he had heard anything about the rush, and deliv- ered «lecture on the evilsof rushing. Everybody was pledged not to engage in rasbes, but it was to late, as the rushes had come off the night before. The sophomores decided that the provocation of the fresb- men absolved them from _ their pledge, and there was some more harm- less hazing. The faculty found out who had being doing it, and this morning it was announced that David Gilbert Adler, of Phiiadelphia, Alexander Brit- ton, of Washington, William Lawson Harvey, of Cincinnati and Robert Elliot Tod, of Scotland, had been expelled. The case et others are under corsidera- tion. Eight or nine freshmen have been questioned by the faculty. They may be suspended. but ic is likely that no further action wil! be taken. New Haven, Sept 23.—The usuol sophomore-freshman rush has eccurred at Yale College, and several freshmen were injured severely. One was trampled by a crowd of sophomores, aud had to be assisted to his room, ~~ DE DATIOY Hx A MTN ELEY, GRAIN Baes at the London House, sep 22 eod Boy the Me Tea sold by R. K.
