Focusing on the interview in its context rather than just its intellectual con- tent, it becomes possible to talk about something more than just the cogency of its argumenti Mr. Dalton's article has provoked at least three reactions which at least pretend to have something of the intellectual about them and at this time in this place such a consequ— ent has little precedent. Mr. Dalton‘s article ra- draws_atténtion to what seems to me to be genuine problems concerning know- ledge. e.g. what sort of rationale makes a belief rational? Do some rationa- les preclude rationality? (Faith?) Are there viable non empirical rationales for empirical asSertions? Faith, Keep truckin' Stan! Ko Butler I have also proposed to council that commencing ne- xt year when new committee port Studeng heads are chosen, that they lup:.an immediately submit a budget a: u;?:; proposal for their entire duration as committee head, rather than in September.‘ This year's budget for_the Student Union will be drawn up by the Treasurer, the Co- mptroller and the Business Manager. ‘While on the tepic of cha- nges, yet another”sugges- tion would be that each cl- ass be reqtired to raise funds for their own gradua- tion, over their four year stay, and not as in the pa- st be required to gather for their first three years. I do feel that a signific- ant amount of learning “Kr uld have taken place desp» ite the use of "carrot-&- stick devices". That the grade for the paper would probably not predict my career success is certain _but then all the grade is supposed to do is to indi— cate the level of compete— nce shown on that particu- lar project. It would be argued that the above example deals only with a topic that I would have been receptive to. Let us say that I had been given something that the "establishment" felt important or something th— at I particularly did not like. Such indeed is the ‘ case with my taking cours- es in philosophy.SOCial statistics, cartography, & intermediate physical geo— graphy. Since the Comptroller is not required to submit a report, here are a few facts on the Barn. ‘ Last year frozen water pip- es cost the Student Union approximately $1500.00. Having completed these co- urses I can honestly say that each, though they wi- ll not become continuing concerns of mine, broaden- ed my horizons and played an important part of my academic career. Oddly en— ough it was probably the competition that spurred me, a person with little n natural gift for understa— nding geomorphology and elimatology, on to placing fifth in a class of over 200 students in physical geography. My learning, though "compelled", was indeed satisfying in that field. Ironically, the course that I enjoyed mo- st thoroughly (and worked very hard at) was a requ- ired course that I would not have otherwise taken. I realize that I am drawi- ng too heavily on my own experience here but it um» uld be interesting to find v out if many other students do not share similar backs grounds. well, again I've written too much (I"m sorry Ms. typist) so I won't attem- pt to answer Mr Cregier's letter point by point. Both problems have been overcome at very little cost to the Student Union, and it will occur again this year. The Day Care Center is in operation once again, though rents of the children atten— ding. The major change in the Barn has been the taking ov- er of the food serviceby the Student Union. This was done in order to cut down in cost of food to the students, and as far as I can see to date, this has been a suCCess. Over the summer months, the Barn was rented out to vari- ous organizations and produ- ced a profit of $1400.00. It is hoped that next summer “H -u C W ‘ \ graphic by don ballanger this amount will increase,
