The Patriot wishes to convey the impres- sion that the Opposition wish for a Parlia- mentary inquiry into the working of our road system. We know this is mere pre- tence. time, at least, in some measure, the danger of playing with edge tools. Not long since he found fault with the manner in which certain repairs were made Lo Victeria Bridge, Crapaud, by the present Govern- ment; and thereby called attention to the fact that a glaring fraud was practised by somebody, in reference to that work, under the late Government—a fraud, by the way, which neither he nor his masters have never attempted to explain. He next raised sickly sensation about the awarding of the meat contract for the Poor House and Lunatic Asylum, and thereby provoked dis- closures in reference to the supplies of food to the poor and insane, under the benign sway of his masters, everything but cred- itable te the parties concerned. His next theme was kerosene oil. In an evil moment Works with paying extortionate prices for kerosene oil. The retribution was swift. Before the sun had gone down on the day he made the charge, it was hurled back in his teeth, and the charge of “‘ extortion” fastened upon a prominent member of the late Adminisiration, with the stillmore dan- aging revelation that the late Government had displayed the grossest favoritism in making there kerosene eil contract, passing over the tender of J. D. McLeod, Esq., although his offer was 12 cts. a gallon less than the price which they agreed to pay. We now challenge the Opposition to ask for an inquiry into our Road Systems, past and present. We promise them a good time ef it. They will find, in the manage- ment of our Road System, under Davies and Stewart, much that will resemble the supply of inferior meat to the poor and insane, at $6.80 per 100 Ibs., the buying of kerosene oil at 40 cts. a gallon, or the discrepancy of $4.00 per thousand in the price of deal for Vic- toria Bridge. OED Oe Government Appointments. His Honor the Lieutenant Governor, in Council, has been pleased te make the follow- ing appointments : — Mr. Samuel 8. Peterson, to be Registrar of Deeds. James Easton, Charles Owen and Alexander J. Macdonald, Esquires, to be Conservators of the Common of Georgetown for one year, in terms of the Act 6th Victoria, Cap. 27. _——- «> Assistant Lyons Mystery Solved. As two boys—Lavie and Lutes—who pursue the fishing business, were going up Souris River in their boat, on theif return from the fishing grounds, on the evening of Friday last, August Ist, they discovered, tleating among some seaweed, the body of the unfortunate Edward Lyons, who mys- teriously disappeared in October last. The finding of the body fully exonerates the Willis family from the foul slanders with which they were charged. The money sup- posed to be about his person when he dis- appeared was all found in his wallet. A jury was summoned before Dr. McIntyre, Coroner, when a verdict in accordance with the above was returned. The body was found near the spot where the saddle on which he rode was found, shortly after his disappearance. Quirk’s Bakery. It 1s not necessary to call attention to the advertisement in another column. Nor is it necessary to introduee to the business public of this Island, John Quirk, Esq., the well known, enterprising proprietor of the City Steam Bakery. But perhaps all do not know that Mr. Quirk has one of the best establishments of its kind in the Dominion, and that he is prepared w supply the wants the eating community with bread, of all kinds, to almost any ex- tent. If our Island wholesale and retail merchants would patronize him more than they «lo, instead of going abroad to get the refuse of foreign bakers, it would, perhaps, be better for the digestion of their cus- tomers. One of the lessons of the times is to encourage home enterprise, to encourage heme manufactures. We hope to see by Mr. Quirk’s largely increasing sales, that our people are protiting by the lesson, Our contemporary realizes by this |P | ; : Civic Election. *o, Tue election for a Mayor ana Five Com- mon Councilmen teok place in this city te- 'day. THe Moncton Times says :— ‘‘His Excellency the Governor General and H. R. Highness will be met at Monc- ton by the Local Government and it has now been decided that the address of the French people of New Brunswick will be resented here. All this involves a delay of the distinguished visitors at this point and our citizens should at once take steps to make their stay agreeable. The time is short, but an earnest effort made at ence will be all that is required. A full attendance is solicited. For the information of the Committees appointed to let and superintend the erec- tion of arches in different parts of the city, we may remark that tenders were called fur at Fredericton and St. John, N. B., for that purpose, and that splendid arches are being erected in those cities, under contract, at a cost of from $50 to $100 each. The Government will erect a “‘Grand Stand” in front of the Province Building, on which the children attending our public schools will stand and sing. Work on Pownal Wharf is being pushed forward. By the way, has the Mayor forgotten to give notice of the citizens’ meeting ordered by the Council to be held on Wednesday evening ? _—_———-——_ sone mom + Tue Steamer Carrodi arrived from Boston at 2.30 this afternoon with freight and the following passengers :—Rev. At 11 o'clock on Friday, Ist August, inat., a man named Thomas Sweeney, belonging to one of the Provinces, in the empley of Pierce Doyle, Esq., in the quarry of the Souris Kast Breakwater, was badly injured while blasting. The fuse ‘‘hung fire,” and Sweeney, thinking a second one necessary, had just reached the fuse to replace it when the charge went off and blew him about twenty-five feet into the sea. The largest piece of stone, 18 inches square, followed and fell on his thigh breaking it. He was carried to the hospital where Dr. Muttart attended to his injuries. He is doing very well. At 2 o'clock the same day and at the same lace an accident of exactly the same nature, macht to a young man named Jerome Campbell, from Mount Stewart. Campbell escaped with one of his eyes “bunged up” and a quantity of powder blown into his face. In this case no stones were thrown by the blast, which was the cause, in all probability, of his life being saved. Campbell will be ready for work again in a few days. *=Sceo-+ Frremen, dont forget the meeting at the H* and L. House this evening. A SMALL attendance at the market to-day.
