The medal marked one of the many tough and dangerous stages in the life that has i Luigi Longo from his country birthplace in the Italian nortn to leadership oi ltaly's Commu- nisis. Longo. 64. took over as see rotary - general from Palmlro Togliatti. who died last Friday at 71. He had been Togliatti's deputy for 18 years. The party directorship gave h‘m the suc- cession without a single dis- senting vote. It's not that Longo is so be- ;loved in the party. He has imade his share of enemies. lie ‘is a sombre man. a tough talker and a tough actor and many of the younger party notables relish his leadership. l But from the moment of Tog- ,liatii's death there was no Idoubt Longo would inherit the mantle—if only temporarily. it was felt the party had to choose him if for no other reason than to show unity n a time of transit'on. Longo was born to fairly well- lO—dn peasant parents in Fublns Monterrato. a hamlet in a Pieo- l l l ines. STUDIED ENGINEERING As a student he flirted With engineering. But at 20 he lost his heart to politics. He joined the Socialist party for a while. Then, dissatisfied with what. he consider-ed the party's shilly- shallying. he joined forces With s er Socialists who wanted to go farther left. They foundcu Ita y's Communist party. He quickly established him- self as a hard-headed. capable operator. ‘Mussollni's Fascists jailed him Freed after 10 months. he made his way out of the coun- try. He worked underground in France and Switzerland super- vising forgery of documents for other party members and sym- pathizers. From 1933 to 1935 he worked in Moscow as a member of the C o m i n t e r n Political Com mission. When the Spanish civil war broke out, the Communist lead ership sent him to Spain. He was wounded serving as an In- spector general of the interna- ti0nal brigades. Longo's u n d e r ground code name was allo —— rooster. He carried it with him when he went back to Italy in 1939 at the outbreak of the Secono World War. He was promptly seized by the Fascists and con- fined on the prison island of Ventotene. Freed in 1943, be joined Com- munist partisans fighting the Fascists behind German lines. His leadership in the resistance won him the American Bronze Star.
