Drowning Fatality Prevented A drowning fatality was haw-i rowly . prevented on Thursday afternoon through _ the prompt action of two of the employees 0d the Electric Light Plant. His Worship Mayor W. P. MacNeill presided at the gathering and seated with him on the plat- form were sixteen boys and one 8111, all members oi the forces. After singing O Canada Mayor MacNelll addressed the gathering and the following program was carried out: Song: “I'm Proud To Be A Can- ldllm". with guitar accompani- ment by Ernest Clark. In a. ve fine address Rev. W.V. MacDonal spoke oi how the boys had left their homes, well know- ing the dangers awaiting them, and not knowing if they would ever return, oflering their lives to their country. He congratulated the boys and Miss MacInnis, C.W. A.C., on their home-coming. He said although we have celebrated V-E day. we are not at peace. Some oi our brave lads have re- ceived their discharge after years oi service; many of them will soon be fighting in the Pacific war zone. All are deserving of highest hon- ours. It is not enollflb to wish the boys the best, but as public citi- zens it is up t0 us to give them the best. Miss Elinor Campbell then de- lighted the audience with two very tine numbers. Ater keeping the hall convulsed with laughter by his humorous stories, he spoke briefly oi the many victories the boys had won in Europe. victories over sin, and he pointed them to Jesus Christ who had won the true victory for every Christian by his death on the cross oi Calvary. Capt. A.G. Jay, veteran of World War I and a member oi the Can- adian Lcgion, then read an address of welcome and appreciation to the boys and a beautiful signet ring was presented to each. The presentation was made by Miss Anita Lynda, assisted by Mr. Reg- inald Rodgers. Seated on the platform were Ralph Ileard, Preston Darrach, John Maclsaac, Arthur Jay. Ralph John Dalziel, Francis Ber- rtlhur Rodgers, Gordon Jay, Edmund Campbell, Edward Oatway and Arthur Bell. all of the Navy. The Army was represented by Miss Katherine MacInnis, C. W. A. C., Raymond Noonan, Foch MacKen- na, George Gaudet and Kenneth MacAleer, while Reginald Rodgers represented the Air Force. Among all these fine lads the seat oi honor was given to Sgt. Raymond Noonan who lost his leg at Zupton in Holland. but not be- fore he had rcceived- the Military Medal for gallantry while fighting in France. Mrs. Margaret Ferguson received a ring in memory oi her son Jack and Mrs. John‘ P. Gallant received one in memory of her son Ernest. Bot-h these lads died while in the service oi their count . Rings were also received on ehali of Archie Bernard, William MacAleer Charlie Love. Vernon Campbel and Emery Richard. These boys had recently been home on leave but were now absent.
