The first fatality by drowning to occur ill this Province during the present fishing season happened last wedllesrlsy. when Jslnes Mur- phy, a young man of about twenty- sight years. and a son of Mr. Daniel Murphy of Elmira, lost his life while cod~flsbing off Nortll Lake. Although the day was consider- sd too stormy for fishing by most of thc lobster fishermen in the vicinity; Mr. Murphy, who was not aille to swim, went out in his boat alone. Just how" the tragedy took place is unknown, as none of the peflpli? along the shore saw the ull- fortunate man disappear, but shortly after his departure his fishing boat was noticed empty sod adrift in five fathoms water. Other boats put out at once from shore. but were too late to discov- er any signs of the missing man. ‘His boat was picked up, uncapsiz-' ed. about a mile and a llalf from llud. Unlli the weather moderated but little collld be done towards re- covering the body. but immediate- ly the chance offered ‘mlilly boats were at work in an effort to regain it. Up to the time of writing. however this has not been accom- plished. The unfortunate victim oi the tragedy was an able bodied Iilii highly respected young man, ind his sudden and lamentable inliil is generally regretted throughout the whole countryside.
