Decoratixu ey Heat.—A new decora- tive art of French origin, is pyrogravure which consists in engraving upen wood, leather, fabrics, ete., by means ot a heated tracing point. By it extromely varied and remarkavle cifects may be produced. ‘The apparatus consists of three principal parts, j¥iz: an air reservoir in which the air is slightly compressed by the weight of a Aeylinder, which is raised once an hour, 4 carburetter, containing a sponge saturated with alcohol, naphtha or other hydrocar- buret, and a thermo-tracer, which has a platinum tube, whose previous heating to a certain temperature causes the stream of air and hydrocarburet to combine on enter- ing it, and thus maintain a steady heat. Only a portion. of the air from the reser- yoir passes to the carburetber and through « flexible tube to the thermo-tracer, wlile the rest is forced to the handle attached to the tracer, and serves to keep it cool. Tracing points of different sizes and shapes may be screwed into the handle. Pyrogra- vure may be practiced without a know- iedge of drawing, and offers great possibili- ties in the ornamentation of mouldings, panels, furniture, boxes, booke, leather for chairs, etc., and as an accomplishment for young people and amateurs, Miconocipixe —A new antiseptic agent galled microcidine, which is composed of 75 percent of naptholate of sodium and 25 per cent of naptho! and phenyl compounds, has been tried in France. It is a white pow- |aer, soluble in three parts of water. The solution, which is cheap, is said to bea very effective antiseptic, without being poisonous or caustic, or injurious to instru- ments orlinen. Its antiseptic propertics ave inferior to those of corrosive sublimate or napthol, but surpass those of carbolie and toracic acids ten and twenty times re spectively. The sciution has given excel- lent results in dressing wounds. A great increase in eye disease in Brus- sels has been traced to a visit of an Asiatic yuack who has treated many eyes with a weak boracic acid solution applied with the same brush to ail. Virus of serious diseate has been conveyed by the brueh to eyes which before had only unimportant i: fl sa- mation, Mustcat Sanps.— The phenomenon of musical sands, which has only attracted the scientific attention during the last few years, is found to be very common. Drs, H.€. Bolton and A. A. Julien, who have given especial attention to the sunject, have now collected 610 samples of such sands from different parts of the worid, while reports from 85 beaches in the Unit- ed States have shown them that 65 are famgus for musical sands. To the eye 4 patch of this sand is like any other, yet a blind tain whois deaf and du:sb can easily distinguisi it by a distinct vibration, or tickling sensation, commun.cated to hands or feet. From ab ut 590 samples examin- ed, it appears that the eounds—which are produced by friction, and vary im pitch with the amount of sand acted upon—do not depend upon a particular variety cf sand, but upon a condition into which the sand gets. Rolled in a bag, one specimen of musical sand gave a whoop-like sound audible for about 420 feet. Yet this sand— unless bottled—lost its power in a few hours after being taken from the beach, and also became soundless on the slightest admixture of fine powder or of moisture. Tur Exvecrricat Grants —The 10,000 horse power dynamos vf the Deptford Cen- tral Station, London, are being made on the premises by some of the largest ma- chines in England, including a planing machine giving a vertical cut of 20 feet and a horizontal cut of 22 feet, and a lathe with acapagity of ll teet in diameter and 26 feet in iength. There are to be tive of these great dynamos each sup- plying 20,000 lights. The ar- mature ring foreach measures 36 feet in diameter, and the armature aud shaft will weigh 225 tons, and the field magnets 350 tons more, this being exclusive of the mas- sive bed-piates on which both engines and tield maguets willstand. The height of the completed dynamo will be 45 feet. An engine of 6,000 horse power will be at- tached to each end of the armature shaft, snd will reach to a height of 48 feet. It has been shown that the climate of many Italian provinces has been changed by the steady destruction of the forests. the government is seeking to remedy the matter by ollering valuable prizes for tree planting. Onon and Foutness —The odor of the ewer exaggerates its dangers. Dr K. Duncan, of Glasgow, finds that plumbers «re not more lisble than other persons ts that class of zymotic diseases—including typhoid fever, diphtheria, diarrhe. and wre th roat—suppesed to be due to expo- sure to the offensive emanations from shoked drains and soil pipes: gas in the sewer that may not be encoun- “ered outside of it, and netiher typhoid ex- sreta nor tuberculous sputum give forth wore dangerous emanations in decomposing than any other organic substance. The ur of a well-ventilated sewer, in fact, is far less vawlivlesome than that of crowded chools or churches, or even of the houses i half of Glasgow's population. see hte CHEAP WATCH iF so, CALI AT G. It seems the city is looked upon as an El Dorado by the Liquor trade, and we may expect to see the dealers therein flockwg to us from all paris during the *‘three yeara of plenty.” We | think a license law necessary if the city is to be habitable for church-going men and women. Let sickly sentimentalists in morality dream if they will, but, gentle- men of the Legislature, give us a License, The New Time Table. Sin,—The people weat of Summerside Were anxiously awaiting the appearance of the summer time-table of the P. E. I. R. in hopes that the petition sent to the Superintendent, and by him forwarded to Ottawa, in regard to the change of time, would be granted. Bat I find, on compar- ing the new and old, that they are the same, with one or two trifling exceptions. As the Steam Nav. Co. have placed a fast steamer on the route between Summerside and Point du Chene, 1 would think the travelling public west of Summerside should now be accommodated by our rail- way system. If the express that leaves Charlottetown to connect with the boats, would wait as Summerside until her arrival from Point du Chene, and then taking the mails and passengers, run right through te Tignish, it would be au immense bsnefit to the business men of the west. The express sh: :!d leave Tignish in time to connect with the boat. at Summerside, thns saving people travelling to the main- land the Joss of time and expense of stay- ing in Summorside overnight. Again, trading peopie might leave Tigni-h in the morning, go to Summerside, have five or six hours to do their business, and be «bls to return home the same_eyening. .Undec the present arrangement wé have to remaia overnight at Summerside, and cannot get back to Alberton or Tignish until the fol- lowing day, thus causing considerable loss I trust the Superin- tendent will mterest himself in our behalf by granting this change of time, Thanking you, Mr. Ejitor, for your valuable space, | am yours truly, TreK1sB. Tignish, June 4, 189i. 2~ee-s ~2orero Will Asiatic Chviera Follow? Mr. Joe Howard’s theory that, one horror of a similar nature follows another to the pumber of three, has a chance for confirmation thie coming summer if certain predictions prove true. First it. was La Grippe: “ A whim” the French define it. Second came deaths by scores from its after effects, or from the many atmospheric changes of the past few months. Severe cases of pueumonia, bron- chitis, intense catarrh and general loss of strength were tne results, until death was almost welcomed as arelicf to the safferers. So that thia epidemic and ite sequence has proven to be the most terriliy realistic “whim” thatever infested thiscountry. And now fer number three; th: theory is said to be advanced that the cholera is very likely to find fertile soil in the generaliy debilituted eonstitutions of our people resulting from the effects of such a winter and spring as has just past, Whet'er the theory of three will be confirmed in this case or not, remains to be seen. At any rate it behooves every person still affected by any of the complaints due to these climatic changes aud epidemics, such as catarrh or bronchial troulles, to look well trouble is removed this pretient ‘moath; be- fore the heat of suminer stil. more debilitates their syetem.
