Recalls Trout Fishing In "Old Days At Montague By FORBESJIHUDE (Canadian Press Bilalnoal Editor) An article in "Trade News." pub- lished by the Department of Fish- crlcs. Ottawa, says that ”the ex- cellent speckled-trout fishing in Prince Edward Island water: has long been appreciated. but the fishery has by no means been fully exploited." . It also refers to B. 23-acre artif- icial pond at Montague, in King's County. These are things about which this writer has little present-day knowledge, but he thinks he should advise "Trade News" that.there was a. time when the excellent trout fishing of the Montague River. to take one place on the Island. was indeed exploited to the extent that it could stand exploiting; and that t'-.ia,rbc the reason an artificial pond is needed there, is to get it unex- plotted. Itor there are men and women scattered over Canada and the Un- itcd States who can testify to the fact that for the pre-teen and early-teenagers of quite a few years ago, trout fishing in the Montague river was, in a manner of speaking. big business. Particu- larly, it financed their 24th of May baseball picnics. Trout For he (lrearn Immediately aftcr an early clos- ing of school - May 23. a score. maybe two-score, kids trudged sev- cral miles up-river and fished unt- ll'. late afternoon. and then came back tn what. was then the village mow the town) of Montague. and .':cl('. their catch. For big ones they got 12 cents a dozen: for average size. 10 cents: for smaller ones, eight cents; and sometimes they ucre beaten down to six cents. In any event. the proceeds were rttough in buy a freezer of ice- creant and whatever other supplies their modest wants dictated. There was a "pond" there in those days. too. a natural one. and only a few knew about it; or so we liked to think. Memory is tricky. but it seems to have been reached by a walk of some three miles out the New Road to a point which would be well above the dam at M.icKcii7Lic's Mills rsitc of the elec- lric light. planli; then a struggle through somr ivonds: iintll one rmclicd a hit of bench perhaps 10 foot wide. with the river shelving sharply into relatively deep water. There. indeed, was the meeting place of trout. No trout would th-nk of going down river without dropping in: and probably non". would think nf going un without a visit - though it is the down- going ones which the writer re- to members best. 0ne's equipment consisted of a ill-cent bamboo pole. n five-cent line with Lent and sinker. some hooks, and a can of worms. one dropped the line into the valor until hook and worm were nll hut out of sight. Then one watched at trout come along to it. wrinkle his nose. flavor it. and then centlv nibble. At that mom- cut one either cauglit him or he got nivay. Recalls Big Day This writer recalls one dav when inc playcrl this game with 55 trout --'that is. with 55 trout who lost the come and were landed. There was one big follow with was just barely brought in. and Wiill whom the pre-teen-age hand of the writer must have dealt light- l,v., for he continued to flon around for a long time. Finally. the sym- pathies. or conscience, of the young angler were touched. and he put lim back as it sort. of thank offer- ing for the tfniir dozen or so that lav on the blink. The trout. wouldn't believe it at first. and the writer has never seen such R surprised look on a fish's face: But finally he shook him- rcll and swam away. (the trout not the wrltcrl. The writer has tried to make it up to the victims of that day by hardly going fishing again. The (nly trout he has caught since was R lone one years later. at a plizce called Forbes' Landing. in from Campbell River. on Vancou- rm" Island; and distance forbids that it could hnve been any rela- tire of the 53 taken so prodlvzally from the exploited Montague River.
