The Prince on that occasion arrived by water on board a man of war. St. John broke all previous local records at that time in I:-he way of a loyal and spectacular demonstration, but the reception of forty- one years ago is quite eclipsed by that of the present visit. Yesterday the arriva of the Royal Visitors was by train, and their departure will be made in the same way, and probably no more sumptuous railway train has ever been seen in America, if in the world, than that which the Canadian Pacific Railway has placed at the service of the Duke and Duchess and their suite. Two of the dnest. residences, located in the heart of the city and elaborately prepared have been provided ae homes tor the visitors. Caverhill Hall, the residence of Mr. Simeon Jones, ls occupied by the Duke and Duchess. Near by, the dns residence, built by the late Hon. John Boyd and now the propertyof Mr. P. S. McNutt, is set apart for Lord and L...ly Mlnto and their sum. Emu or mess ‘midenoes during the visit will be carefully guarded by one sabaltern, one sergeant, one corporal, one_bugler and 21 men. Four ,eentries will also be posted at the resid- ence ef the Duke and two at theresidence of the Governor General. During the time that the Royal party are in procession the streets along which thcy pass will be lined with troops ported approximately nine feet apart. There will be no admittance to the resi- " dences where the distinguished visitors I are put up. The various public functions which so many will desire to attend will prove a disappointment to thousands who have been unable to obtain tickets. For ` the afternoon reception yesterday at the Exhibition Building but 3,000persous could be admitted and 1.300 of these were school fchildren. For thc evening reception but 2,000 tickets were issued. Some 7,000 ob- functions. It is therefore clear that man appointed and the mass ol the people coul passed on the street. .._._¢_-- G. 4 mf. wsiiwauenn .4 _. _Q l. . -.-fa v... r I _ . ir ` i 0; 1, 1 t. r 1 _ Q ‘? In April last when Premier Bond was in lngland he made representations respecting the French Shore question to which it ls alleged that no answer has been received. Nor has any answer been reeelved to a communication sent Eve , months ago asking the Imperial Govern- 'l ment to persuade the Laurier Government _ to consent to the ratification of the lond- Blalne treaty. The latter delay is:expialn- able on the ground that Newfoundland and Canada are playing at cross purposes and it is very diflicult for the Colonial Secretary to interfere. The true solution of the dilllculty lies in Newfoundland becoming part and parcel ofthe Domin- l-ion. In such union she will receive full justice from Canada, and will _easily _ obtain the ear of the British Government at all times. _ ` ' | TALL c0RN _ doesn’t come by accident.
