A letter from a Mormon citizen to an American paper states:-—“Ten thousand saints have been added to the settlement during the season. Merchandise is lenty, and held at high rates; leather and’ some other manuthctories liave'boen established; a full set of beet sugar machinery, direct from France, had arrived, accompanied by practical operatives; many new buildings had been constructed, harvests had been‘ very productive and abundant. So far for mere temporal matters. The~theo|ogical or spiritual news is far more important. A new era seems to be dawning upon man- kind, or perhaps, we should say woman- kind. Liout. Gunnison, in his work upon Mormons, which should be read by every body, told us that in I843, Jose h Smith, the prophet, hada revelation in re erence to the Mormon system of plurality of wives, or“ marriage for time and eternity.” This revelation was made to the prophet Joseph, but its publication was interdicted, until another revelation should be given to the chief beer of the Mormon church. That interdict, it seems, has been taken off; for Governor Brigham Young, in the presence of 2,500 saints and sinners, in the great tabernacle of the “ chosen people,” pro- claimed the law of marriage; and then, with that vigor which has characterized the Mormon conquest at Salt Lake, sent out to the heathen lands of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, the West Indies, the Pacific Islands, and the old United States, one hundred missionaries. Professor Orson Pratt has been given the charge of the States, east of the Rocky Mountains, and particularly to convert all tho ladies to the beauties of the plurality system of mar- riage.” Tit: TILIGRAPII Lmss or run Woitan up To l853.—Thc extent of telegraphic communications, completed and in operation throughout the world, at the beginning of the present year, may be esitimated as far as can be gathered from the returns, at nearly 40,000 miles. Of this amount there were nearly 4,lIl0 miles in Great Britain, of which I00 miles only were underground, with about 400 or 500 miles in course of construction England, Scotland, and Ire- ] , and as many more projected. In America there were fl0’000 miles of tolc-. aph completed and in operation, with 10, $1 more in process of construction. Rus- sia has just commenced her system of . tole- gra ho between St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Cracow,‘arld the ports of the Bulticand Black seas. About 4,000 miles are about to be constructed in India. The only unsup- ' portions, that will soon present thun- oelveu on u telegraphic map of the world, will be Australia, Alhlca, and China. PIOVIIIONAL coaun'r'rl::: Hon. DANIEL Bunsen, Chairman; Hon. Charles Young, Hon. W. W. Lord. Hon. Charles Honsle , Hon. Josoph Pope, Francis Lsngworth, .eq., Jainus Walliinshaw, Esq., Mr. James Anderson, Hung Hasusrd. Eoq., Hon. George Ilirnle, Mr. sot-gs Boer, James D. Hauznrd, I-‘.sq., George Dolllois, Esq. THE superiority and advantages of Gas over every other method yet discovered for lighting Towns are so self-evident and so universally acknowledged. that it would be superfluous to dilute on the subject; and it is only surprising that, while every Town and considerabl Village in Great Britain, as also many Towns in the neighbouring Provinces, are lighted by Gas, this, the Capital of Prince Edward Islund, should be still in diirkneu. To supply this desideratum, it is now proposed to form a Joint Stock Conipuny—-to be Incorporated by uti Act of the I.egisluture—wit.l1 a subscribed Capital of £6000. in I200 Sliures, of £5 each, to be managed by a body of iteclors, annually chosen by the Shuts- holders. As many of the inhabitants of Charlottetown may be comparatively unucquainted with the practical results of Gas Companies, it may be proper to ob- serve, that u Joint Stock Company for the purpose of lighting the Town with Gas, can hardly be called a speculation; because it is now ascertained, b ’ re rence to the annual Reports and Dividends of t eGas Companies of Great Bruin, and some of the neigh- bouring Colonies, that wherever they have been managed with ordinary prudence and economy, they have yielded ii certain and steady return of annual interest on the capital invested. Previous to bringing the scheme before the public, .~' the Provisional Committee had been in correspond- ence with competent parties, both in the neighbor- ing Provinces and in Great Britain, and from the information thus obtained, and the estimates the have received, they are of opinion that the La , Buildings, Apparatus, Machinery and Pipes requi- site to enable the Company to go fully into operation, may be acquired and completed for and with the proposed capital. To enable the Company to commence operations at once. and on the most advantageous terms, it has been resolved that l.| deposit of £1 5s. or share be paid on the allocation of shares, and list no further cull be made, till the Act of Incorporation be obtained; and that such further calls shall be ayable by such instalments, and at such intervals, as the Directors may judge most unveuient for the Shareholders and the requirements of the em- tiny. P Although certain spirited individuals were pre- pared to subscribe a whole of the requisite Capi- tal, it is deemed but fair to give the public an opportunity of partici tiling in the advantages of the undertaking; and or this purpose the Subscrip- tion List will remain open at the Otlic Lawson, Interim Secretary to the Committee.- more than oao-half of the Shares being already subscribed. JOHN LAVVSON, In. Secretary. February 3. 1853. § O_[)‘ice—DesBrt'say'r Buildings, Qturn-strut, same door as e Clerk of Cnmtnissioners of Small Debts—uP ITAIRI. Iti addition to its greater economy, Gas Light may also be renounced safer than any other ordi- nary Light. tproducea no spnrks—it cannot be carelessly placed in contact with bed curtains, or substances easil ignited, and it requires scarcely any attention. t may s turned down in an instant to most minute speck of Items, ready to be restored to full brilliancy when necessary, by the simple turning of the stop cock; and even when It escapes by the carelessness of an attendant, or a defect in the fittings. it at once indicates the acci- dent to the whole household, by the disagroealde smell which It occasions. From the large quantity which must be mixed with atmospheric air fun it becomes explosive, it is scarcely possible that tbi accident should oc- cur. in any ordinary apartment, even if the Gas wore to escape for the purpose. And so its small so iaotantl indicates its presence in col- lavo, or other co nsd situations, where ll may have escaped in uantitv from the accidental break- ing, or leakage otqa pipe, it is only by the greatest carelessness, or i norsnce. that a light will be ap- tho froo admission of air.
