Prickly Porky has switching his tall from side to side. It was a queer-looking tail. was covered with little short "spears. They are called quills. It made that tail look very. very prickly. As Too-Smart started to move, Sammy Jay shrieked another warn- ing. ”Keep away from that tail!" lhe shrieked. "Don't touch that tail.” The young foxes didnt know what to make of that warning. but without knowing why they heed- ed it, and Prickly Porky shuffled away. They didn't follow, for they were only too glad to have him go. They stood watching him out of sight, then turned back to their doorway. On the sandy doorstep Too-Smart discovered one at Prickly Porky's quills. Of course he didn't know tzinything about those quills. All he knew was that this was one of those things that he had seen in Prickly Porky's coat, and had thought to be simply very stiff hairs. Now he sniffed at it. Foxes, like dogs and many other four- lcgiged folk, depend very much on their noses to learn about things around them. This time the sniffing , told him. nothing. i Soft-Eyes joined him, and the i Mr. Gordon stated that the capi- penditures which have been made over the past two years. taken as a. whole, their effect is to im- prove the earning capacity of the Canadian National System and also to carry out a.n objective to provide the most. modern facilities to service and requiremetrits of shippers and passengers. Includ- ed in the progrrunme to date have been substantial betterments to the mad bed and track structures. nieclianimtion in the form of pow- er XIlflChlll('l'y and work equipment. improvements to terminal facilit- ies, modernization of signalling aquipment and telagraphs, and as well as portion of the planned pro- gramme. covering the conversion of steam power to the diesel lo- comotive. quill. then Too-Smart started to put out a paw to touch it. "Donlt touch it! Don't touch it!" shrieked Sammy Jay from a neigh- boring tree. ”What's the matter with that fel- low? He's done nothing but scream "Don't touch! Don't touch!"' said Too-Smart. "There can't be any harm in touching a little thing like that." He reached out a black paw, and began to push that quill that North had opened more lightly than was his habit. because this forced South to In immediate decision. In sight were five club tricks, three spades, three diamonds and one heart, and if the six missing diamonds were divided 3-3, south would not need the heart finesse. To make a. sad story brief. at least, South took the heart finesse because of the mathematical truth that a finesse is 50-50 whereas a 3-3 break happens only about one- third of the time. The result: down one. South's arillimc-tic was sound. as far as it went, but it did not cover the eiitirc situation. The right play at Trick 1 was the heart ace, be- cause after that declarer would make his grand-slam contract if either of two things developed: it he found a 3-3 break, of diamonds. or, failing that diamond break, if fthe same defender had the heart king and the diamond stopper. In this latter case that defender would be squeezed. In other words. it was not I simple case of weighing the dia- mond break against the heart fin- esse. Moreover, there was the ad- ititioiial factor that West scarcely would have led away from a king against a grand-slam contract. Pogo As THE Fll?6T 515?
