I It came and passed. alld little 5'damage was don'e. The sun came out, the calm was perfect, and the people threw open their doors and windows in answer to na- ture's smiles. Unfortunately this was only "the eye" of the storm, the calm at the centre around which the hurricane raged, and in a short e time the other side of the circle t struck them when they were un- prepared for it and the devastat- ion was complete. Open doors and windows left their houses at the mercy of the wind and the loss was irreparable. All the Gospel accounts of the events leading to the crucifixion describe Christ's warning to Pet- er, and then his denials. He was caught unprepared as were the inhabitants of that southern isle.I He met defeat at the point. of his greatest strength. If ever there was a heart full of love and loy- If ever there was a man brave to the point of recklessness. it was Peter. When the hands of the officers whom Judas led were laid on Christ, Peter drew ills sword and struck out against the enemy, even though he was aware that resistance against such odds was hopeless. it would have meant certain death if Jesus had not stopped the light. But when his Master was taken prisoner and refused to use in His own defense the power which they knew was ills, dismay seized all His follow- ers. Peter was caught off his guard by the nlockery of a. mis- chievous girl. and the man whom danger could not daunt fell be- fore scorn and did the thing which he had just declared that he would die rather than do. 0 O C The Lclltell period is the time for self-examination and re-dedi- lcalion. and Peter's experience lcontalns lessons for us all. In both cases the defenders were so confident that they relaxed their watchfulness, and the as- sailant found the city's defenses unmanned. No one can afford to presume on his strength. Against. a frontal attack one would be invincible but. the surprise approach from an unexpected quarter finds entry to the heart secure in its self- confidence. '0 O 0 Oliver Cromwel never turned back in battle, but in ills later years he was tormented by his dread of the assassins dagger. It is the subtle attack of a resource- ful tcmpter whose success often surprises the world. x Men who would defy blows cl-ingc befol-c mockery. Many a Christian conceals his principles because he fears the scorn of the world. Young Christians in their social circles. business men in their dealings with the worldly will blush for an affection and hide the loyalties which are the deepest convictions of their con- science. Peter. who saw his Mus- tcrs cm-my fall bcfore his sword. shrank back before the taunts of a girl and smothered the most sacred loyalty of hlslife. He didn't mean his dcnlal:Cilrlst knew that he didn't: and the eyes of Christ turned on him as he cursed and swore, pierced his heart. and saved his soul. 0 O 0 When Mackav of Formosa preached in a. home church, he loved to give out the hymn. "1'm not ashamed to own my Lord, , Or to defend His cause." And the old hero would square ills shoulders and Join with heart and voice in the congregatlorrl song of unbending devotion to Christ. So should every believer ring out his faith in the face of a scornful world. No failure, such as Peter's, i.- hopcless. Any man may fall where he was most confident that he would stand, but the door into repentance is always open and Christ "who is greater than our hearts and knows all things". is ready to receive and restore thosl who never meant to fall Him.
