There are few .countries were sv little attention 1s paid to ontward neatness | ‘as is the case in Canada. This is a matter iin winch new countries almost necessarily | differ from old ones. their villages and their towns clean, and in pmaking "heir outward surroundings res- ipectable. On many parts of the continent slovenliness is so utterl, condemned by public opinion, and one’s standing depends so much upon his surroundiogs, that every- jthing is scrupulously finished and clean. Time spent in clearing away unsightly dead timber wonld not only furnish a certain amount of firewood to the saving of valn- able, or prospectively valuable, living crop, but would add to the price obtainable if the farm were brought to sale. The keep- ing of fences in good repair and the plant- ing of hedges along their lines to take their places in time would also pay. Fencing rails cost more now than they once did, and some day they will probably have to be thus replaced. By the way. would it not be possible to improve.some of these unsightly fences off the face of the country altogether? The road front should also be attended to. Shrubs and shade trees should be planted in ornamental positions. The house should be adorned with climb- ers, and in short everything done that will inake home pleasant to the eye of those who remain in it, and its memory in the minds of those who may wander frem it the brightest thing on earth. In short, our farmers should make themselves into coun- try gentlemen, and bring up their sens and their daughters, ®o, with a pride in their origin and calling. If this proposition wore carried out, what a changed country this would be in six months. Eden itself, we are given to understand, would, on the other hand, soon have to become a wilder- ness had man not been put into it ‘‘to dress and to keep it.” ~~ ——~+—-—_—. 68 0 — — The Scot and the Devil. Highlanders have the habit when talking their En@iish, such as it is, of interjecting the personal pronoun ** he’ where not re- quired, such as ‘‘the king he has come.” Often in consequence a sentence is rendered exiremely ludicrous. A gentleman said he recently listened to Rev. Mr. --—— , who tesan his d s:ourse thus:—*‘ My friends, you will tind my text im the first epistle generated Peter, fifth chapter and eghth verse: ‘‘The devil he goeth about like a roaring lion seeeking whom he may ;devour.” Now, my brethern for your instruction I have divided my test into four heads. Firstly, we shali endeavour to ascertain who the devil he was. Secondly, we shall inquire into his geographical posi- ‘ion, namely : ** Where the devil he was. Thirdly, who the devil he was seeking. And, fourthly and lastiy, we shall endeavor to solve a question which has never yet been seived—-what the devil he was roaring about.” 4-<—D-P nn . A Parisian Story. A gentleman in full dress—broadcloth coat, white gloves— bolted into a drug store precipitately and asked : . ‘** Can you make me, at once, a prepara- tien of caster vil that can be taken without evsr detecting the odor, or even suspecting that it’s a medicine, and yet that will—you know, one that—that’ll——”’ ‘*T think I could,” said the druggist. In five minutes the apothecary came ont with a glass of pl@sant looking liquid, and said : ‘‘ Monsieur, while you are waitirg, per- mit me to offer you a glass of lemonade.” The panting enstomer drank the beverage hastily. Several minutes passed, when he growled impatiently : ‘*Come, come, where *s that prepara- tien ?” ** Monsieur,” said the apothecary, I am happy to observe that I have exactly met your desire. That preparation you have just taken, without the slightest suspicion | of its character-—” ‘-Beast, villian! Ah—h! Sacr-r-r? It wasn’t for myself that | wanted it! I’m to be married in an hour, and it was for my prospective mother-in-law, who has just taken ill !” ( =. Porrsmoutu, New Haven, Oct. 3.— ‘John Elkins killed Andrew J, Dearborn near Kingston, last night. The former | with his wife had accompanied Dearborn to a neighbor’sin search of Dearbon’s wife who had left him. Elkins was advised when he consented to accompany Dearborn that the latter would assault him and con- Dearborn did attack him on the road with the intention .of robpjng him, and Elkins knocked him down @®nd shot him, inflict'ng terrible wounds. Elkins and wife tell this story. Both have been arrested. Dearborn was a bad character and is said to have served a term in State prison. Aman had the mis:ortunee recently to lose his wife. Over the grave he caused a stone to be placed on which in the depth of his grief he had ordered to be inscribed: ‘**Tears cannot restore her—therefore I The English spend a, ‘great deal of time keeping their farms, | Garibaldi is creating great excitement in [taly. The Signal Corps Station at Cape Henry, Va., on the 26th ult., reports te the Chief Signal Officer as follows : ‘‘ The two masted British schooner Lizzie and Emma, Me- Phee, from Norfolk for Kingston, Ja., with a cargo of shingles, was burned last night in Lynn Haven Inlet, The crew6f six and the sails were saved.” All honor to Helen Gladstone. Al. though daughter of the English Premier she earns her own living, having taken the position of private secretary to the vice principal of Newnham College, where she was lately a student. Her main object is to set an example to her sex, and to do her share towards putting a stop to the idea, which is so prevalent'in England, that it is degrading for a lady to work for her living. : Lord Archibald Campbell, on recently arriving in Liverpool by the ‘‘ Peruvian,” published an account of a gigantic fight of which he and his fellow passengers were witnesses off Bellisie Island, between a monster sword fish about 30 feet long anda ire whale. When the combat faded from the sight of those on board the “Pernvian” the whale was getting the worse of the enconnter, f James Fc rrester and wife, went to Indian apolis from Laporte on Tresday. They s‘opped at a hotel ovea night, and blew ont the gas before going to bed. Next morning Forrester was fovnd dead in bed, and hig wife in sveh a condition that her recovery Was despaired of, Two men, one of them James Hanna, of Oakland, Pa., were found dead in bed in the Burnet House, at Stroudsburg, on Wednesday. They blew out the gas on retiring, and were suffi- catted. A begus Medical College, similar to that recently discovered in Philadelphia, and desiguated the New England University of Aris and Science, has been found in Bos- ton, the leading operator of which appears to be Mr. Harry C. Stickney, who was one of the Buchanan Faculty of Philadelphia, What number of the diplomas has been issued by the New England institution is not known. Stickney asserts that none have been issued in this country, but there are evidences that some have been sent to Germany and other parts of Europe, and inquiry on the subject has been made of parties at the suggestion of the Ger- man Minister at Washington. Stickney, in 1875, procured «New Hampshire a char- ter for this institution, which however was soon afterwards repealed, but investigation shows that the business has heen active at the office of the University in this city, Dearn or A Norep Caaracrer.—Mr. Gamble, Master of Horse to the Emperor Napoleon, died recently at Chiselhrrst. He was porn im Saltecoats in 1817. He entered the service of Prince Louis Na- poleon tm Lendon in 1846, went with him to Paris in 1848, played his part in the coup detat in 1851, acconipanied the Em- peror throngh the Italian campaign of 1859, the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, and was with the Emperor in captivity at Wil- helmshohe. He also came to Chiselhurst, and remained the faithful attendant of the Emperor, Prince Imperial and Empress who were greatiyattached to him. De- ceased had many Scotch and English friends, who will remember his hospitality during their visits to the Imperial stables at the Louvre, where he had the charge of the largest and finest stud in the world, He received presents from mest of -the crowned heads in Europe when vis- iting Paris, including the Queen and Prince Albert. He was proud of being a Scotch- inan, remarkably shrewed and intelligent, and kind to his relatives. a — A Good Account. “To sum it up, six long years of bed-rid- den sickness and suffering, costing $200 per year, total $1,200—all which was stopped by three bottles of Hop Bitters taken by my wife, who has done her own house- work for a year since, without the loss of a day, and I want everybody to know it for their benefit.” “Joun Weeks, Butler, N.
