H The Cadre, January 20, 1975, page 8 Mrira c-le at [JP Pickonlaco ‘ J It happened away back in December but it is too good a story to skip... Having mi— ssed two foul shots with only 45 seconds to go & our Pan— therettes trailing the Saint ' Mary's Girls by a 57—58 score Sandra Dunsford appeared to be the leading nominee for the "Goat of the Game" that designation so often given to a player when a close game is lost. A stout heart, however, does not give way to adversity easily so when Janet Trainor stole the ball downcourt & / made an accurate heave to Sandy, who was surrounded by jumping & arm waiving Santa— marians, she knew just what to do with it...just as she was being deposited on her hyp— ertrophied gluteus maximua she made a desperate arching throw that went through the basket just as the buzzer* sounded to give us a 59-58 victory. For this heroic feat Sandra becomes our pick for the "1975 Jock Talk Extra Effort Award"...This award & 60 cents will get her’beer at all 1976 Pig & Whistles. While we may joke about this we can't tell you how pleased we were-for Sandra is one of our favorite athletes who gives a 200% effort every game she plays. Sunday's game against Dalhousie did not ‘ shooting soured in the first 'though we have not heard that E|*..'.Goa‘t Turns -|nto Lamb!!! have as happy an ending as,' W after holding the Dal girls even in the first half, our\ Talk support we managed to win ,ing the way for U.P.E.I. ten minutes of the second stanza &, although we were catching up, time ran out with us on the short side 56—49. _Janet Trainer Scored 13 points in the loés. As this is being written the girls are playing the Moncton Blue Eagles...we had to choose between finishing this in time to watch the super—bowl and seeing the girls play &, when we flipped a coin to determine our choice it did not stand on its edge! The girls go to Acadia & SMU next weekend...next home action will be against Acadia on the 3lst. A lthough Fred Shero MUST have known of the time conflict by ween the Red Army/Flyers game and the Panther/Dalhousie basketball match the schedule was not changed & it did not appear that the attendance , figures at either conte st were diminished extensively aerheY Succeeded buy it was close &, hopefully, both teams finished in a happy mood. This win gives us a 4—2 league'record and puts us in a tie with Dalhousie for third place. However, should the season end with these two tied we would get‘ the advantage in placing_in_.. asmuch as we outscored them in the league gamés, which 'were split. 'Tom Kappos & ‘ Lloyd Pullen led our scorers with 16 points each but coach Gary Heald gave his bench a lot of the action and the greatest applause went_to Anson MacLauchlan and rookie Colin MacAdam who racked up 12 & 4 points re— spectively. Sponsored by the Panther Booster Club the Panther Basketball team play— ed two games against the strong Budget-Rent-AQCar team\the first in Summerside which was won by Budget ~ 100-89, and the second in The~face1ess Mark Vickers enra Philadelphia returned our co—' urtesy by announcing the pro— gress of our chronologically competing contest. In our 83—62 victory we believe that our boys played better than and P,E,I,.University team that we have ever seen.. partivularly in the first ‘ half in which we outscored the third place Tigers 44—26. Although the play of all the Panthers was excellent ~ we'd be remiss if we did not mention that center Tom Kappos sparked the team with 17 points and 16 rebo- unds. On Friday night the Pan— thers played the kind of game we enjoy....they took an ea— rly lead over Memorial and never looked back, winning 98-56 after leading 55—21 at the half. It was a ple- asant evening .-.the real contest being in their eff- orts to keep the Panthers short of the 100 point mark.
