Lewis was won against overwhelming odds, and that the Soudanese soldieres when under European command, are irresistable fighters. The Dervishes numbered about 4,000, while Col. Lewis force comprived 525 men, & emall detachment of artillery and a few Arab irregulars. Sighting the enemy, ol. Lewie marcked his litile force to within 30 yards from the main position of the foe, and then gave orders to fix bayonets and charge.
