Some damage is done to buildings at lquique, but no lives wre reported lost. Fortunately bhere was no tidal wave, aithough the sea was greatly agitated. A despatch dated Iquique, January 25th, afternoon, says last niglit at 8.20 a very heavy earthquake occurred. Daring the rest of the night and to-day shocks cccurred every fifteen minutes. The roads were ol- structed and shipping operations paralyzed ‘or three days. A Callao letter of the 23th says the heavy surf sill continuss, caasing muca loss on the beach. No ships are yet lost, but it is ‘eared the violent wave may cause one or another to break adrift, and then the loss would be heavy. ‘three men were drowned through ap- proaching the surf. ‘Lhere is no sign of the sea abating, and many families are ieaving for Lima.
