The general hope that irr this time of anxiety and uncertainty no time should be wasted in useless discus- sion was as nearly as possible realized. Throughout the term there was but lit_tle adverse criticism and the closing session was marked by an interchange of compli- ments betweeii the two sides of the house on the harmony and good fellowship _that had permeated almost all the proceedings. Perhaps the only ripple in the calm sea of politics at_ this time _was the un_ca_lled for and regrettable criticism of a ruling by the Speaker, Hon. A. P. Prowse, which ap-_ peared in the Patriot. Mr. Prows_e’s_ repu- tation for fairness and impart_ia_lity is strong enough to survive such criticism and all in the House,, on both sides,_agree that he is one of the ablest and readiest Speak- ers that have occupied the c_hair for many years. His ruling inthis particular instance was absolutely correct and we feel _sure that the lawyer members of the Opposition __ coincide with his view. _ ' ' Premier Arsenault, as we have already- siated, has every reason to congratulate h mself upon the success of his first ses- sion as leader of the House. Today. he stands infinitely higher in the_opini_on of| his followers and of the Opposition in the legislature and in the respect of the gene- ral public than he did when the session opened. He handled the affairs of the pro-Q vince in a masterly and effective manner, not mincing matters when _replying to cri-_ ticisms, while at the same time never need-_ lessly arousing opposition by tilting with windmills. The compliments paid _ by! inemiberson the governinentside and by the Opposition were thoroughly deserv_ed,_ and we are ,sure the people throughout the_ pifoviiice will appreciate the fact that in, this time of war ordinary party tactics were to a considerable extent put to onef sideand ‘fall were for the state.” ` ' 'I A _,The Premier has had an exceptionally busy 'ti-me during the session. In addition to leading the House and conducting the' affairs of the government he was _at his oilice late and_ early receiving as many as six delegations before the _House -met in _ the morning, his day’s work averaging six-_ teen hours -for the past month. The Pre-1' miei- will enjoy a short reséiite now that the House has beeiigirorogue . | Notwithstan ing the shortness of the session-_ no fewer than twenty-six bills were gassed including the excessively, heavy _ rohibition Consolidation Act. What. this nieans only those who have had actual experience of the House will fully realize.i he reports, which have appeared in the_ Guardian, will have given our readers an accurate idea of the proceedings and of the iralibre of the Opposition at the present ime. The Clerk of the House, Mr. H. E. Dawson, had probably amore strenuous time than usual owing to the speed with which business was transacted but he dis- charged his duties with his usual unfail- ing courtesy to and consideration for all concerned. Similarly the Usher of the Blac_k Rod, Mr. Dugaltl Currie, and all the oflicials of the House were unremitting in their attention to their duties, 'all tending to make the 'session one of pleasant recol- lections. ` ' c* 0.._‘__&_ |'0'l'.\'_ro rnitlors _Thy New H_a_mponire‘_ Food Adminis- tration has begun 'a “potato” drive” which will-last for one month' for the thdigqg surplus “studies of “’pot`atoes. “ The mo's_t.;compreli,eiisive publicity arrange- ments'ha've been made to bring to the at- tention of all people the advantage of eat- ing as many potatoes as possible for the double purpose of saving wheat and other food and of helping the farmers. ' There are several hundred thousand bushels of potatoes stored away in barns and cellars of New Hampshire as well as of this and other provinces of Canada, with a falling market and little demand.
