naszannm GAZETTE ‘misiiEF«i'§,T1'iai.}iia?§ §.”'is5'é.”—_ Tris General Assembly meets we see, on the 14th. \Vliat is the willrmigmiot the asscinbly ofwiso iuen going to do? no thing is ver certain, they have not fair to go to liiid work. The spirit of procrastinalioii is as strong in public bodies as it is in indiviulnnls. Let us see; the arty now in power came into office in 1850, an , with the exception of one year, have held the reins of government ever since. Now, what has been done? Wliatgrand improvement has been originated under circumstances which were highly favorable to the execution of the most important 1 ’l‘|ie first question that is asked, when a criterion is wanted of the state of adviinceiuent of ii country, particularly in America, how are the ro:ids,—-what are the facilities of intoreoininnuicatioii and of trans- port,—liave you railroads, canals, turnpikes? Vhat answer can be given with any regard to truth in this respect? It is tliis,—we have reads it is true, but of the worst possible kind; all our main post roads lead directly over the suiii- mits of all the hills that are to be met with in the route through which the MISS. In the spring of the year, they are all but impassable. n the suiiiiuer it is true, what by patching here and incnding there, without the least pos- sible pretence to system or regularity, or with a view to permanence, a tolerably smooth sur- face is obtained, lasting about two inontlis in the twelve; the instant the autumn rains begin, and the intercourse is greatest, the roads are cut up into deep ruts and ullies; holes are suffered to exist, that threaten danger to life and limb, and to shorten the story, our roads, though they have increased in number, are no better in quality than they were five-and-twenty years sinco. There is no system, no rule for progressive improvement liiid down. In 1824. the road to Malpeque—went by a route which was hill in the extreme. In the first yearofGo- vernor eady’s Administration, an entirely new road was projected from Bagnall's to Glover’s and what was more to the purpose, completed in the course of the next year, t iough the reve- nue of the Island amounted to but £4,000. 'I‘|iis was a vast improvement well and spiritedly carried out. Now, although the necessity of having a main post road that will communicate with Suinnierside, one of the principal entrance orts of the Island, free from those intolerable ills that lie between this and Bagnall's. and c oliorter and altogether easier to man and beast, and although the revenue is boasted of as being upwards of £40,000, still there is the same roundabout way of getting to St. Eleanor's and the Gulf-shore. The Island is out of debt, tri- umphantly exclaiins the Esamimr. What then I We had muoli sooner see it £40,000 in debt. provided there were level roads to all parts of the Island, and a dail communication with the main-laud b wa of ictou and Slicdiac. What is £2,000 a-year interest to a growing country when the abvantages of internal communication are considered. It would not be more than five shillings out of the pocket of any farmer on the IsIand—how much would good, level roads, dry and firm at all seasons. put into it? That's the question ; make a steamboat brid e, so that every man who has business with t 0 Island_ in any part cl’ the world, can be certain of getting to it or returning from it any day in the week while the navi tiou lasts, and on will make every farm in t e Island worth 50 per cent more than it is now in three ears time. It is not the Governor's fault that those things are not olfeoted, that we are sure of. Let the adminis- tration shew that it is not theirs. We had a ColouiaLMail on Thursday night, but no later news from Europe. Lscrnss.—Tho Rev. R. 8. Patterson, A. Ac. will deliver a Lecture on Thursday evening next, Feb. 7th inst. D.
