Notwithstanding the inclemency oi the weather a large audience as- sembled in the Caledcnian Club roams last evening to hear a lecture by Mr. John McKenzie on "The Early lrlah Settlers of Prince Eu. ward Island.“ Mr. John Anderson presided. and there was an animat- ed discussion at the close taken part in by Judge Stewart, Messrs, Albert Simpson. D. J. Macdonaid, W. L. Cotton, H. L. Palmer and Rev. W. Bruce Muir. Mr. McKcnna spoke as follows: in midsummer, i759, n nee; o; transports carrying troops from Cork arrived at Halifax, from where they carried the soldiers to Louisbourg, which place was besieged by the English. when the place was cap- tured ill i758, General Amherst sent Lord Rollo. with a etachment to take possession of the Isle of St. John. In this body of soldiers there must have been a large number of the Irish who embarked at Cork early in the same summer, and after taking part in the capture of Louis- bourg wore cent to this Island. AmhersCs instructions to Lord Rollo were as follows: "Sir, you are to take on you the command of three hundred men and two hundred light infantry and Rangers in the whole five hundred!" Lord Rollo. on his arrival with his troops, met with no resistance from the French and soon had his men quartered at i5ort J ner as the circumstances would per- mit. During their stay in garrison here. no doubt some of these and rez’ ‘s that replaced them when their time in the army would have expired. as was the custom. they would receive grants of land as re- wards for their services. In this manner the first Irlshmen to‘ settle the Island were gmntcd to the rcr pective persons who were entitled to them. and in this distribution a cer- tain number of Irlshmen were among the lucky ones. Walter Pai- tersoil. son of William Patterson, or Foxiiail. County Done-gal. Ireland. received a grant of Lot 19. He must have been a man of some influence by the fact that he was appointed Governor in 1769 and sworn in on thevith of August of that year, and arrived on the Island on the 30th of August, i770. As soon as possible after his arrival the new Governor. illl i778. Hi8 ly different light.
