CHEMICAL FERTILIZEBS Many fertilizer experiments tave been carried out on the ill- ln a four year rotation at the Charlottetown Experimental Stat- ion started in 1919 with potatoes. wheat. clover. and timothy an application of an ion: of barnyard manure was used for the potato crop for ten years and produced an average of 296.7 bushels of potatoes. From 1929-1952 ten tons of manure with 730 pounds of a 4-8-8 chemical fertiliser were used. During the period from 1940 to 1952 the potatoes gave an average yield of 252.2 bushels. A section of the area was given an application of one ton of limestone each year before lllTllAllE yielllslltolt potatoes but reduced the yield of potatoes and on this area the potatoes were unsaleable due to potato scab; while the potatoes were almost free of scab where lime had not been applied. The fertil- izer used instcacl of one half of the application of 20 tons of man- ure did not maintain fertility as rneasu ed by the yield of pota oea.
