PRIINCIHAIIS REPORT Mr. chalnnan, Your Excellency Reverend Fathers, Ladies an Gentlemen :- ' Today marks the close of another school year, and it is mv dut and‘ privilege to present. for your or- matlon, the annual report of the ac- tivities of Queen square School for the year 1940-1941 We are passing through, at is without doubt the gravest situation‘ the world has ever faced. The rapid‘ spread of total war has convinced us that "the madman of Berlin" is striving. not oniv for Nazi supremq _ in Europe. but also for the com- plete subjugation of all free-peoniesd and the utter destruction o tliosel Christian democratic prnciplcs which we have been protect ng for centuries. The success of Bl tzkrleg, tactics in continental Europe, and the speed with which Nazi dive- bombers and panzer divisions have conquered country after country, have only served to stiffen the mor- ale and coura of the brave oe- lendcrs of Briafn the last strong- imld of democrnrv in the eastern hemisphere and the hope of all the - -..mi CIVIIITrPCI world. The ludcrviitahle spirit and cour- met Francis, Kenneth McKenzie, at; v Prize. Application, Grade V. (Misti age of the British people have been ) must come through the presented by M of His time, and which His Holy Church has since spread QITOIIRIF, out the whole world. It is also evi- dent that any successful termin- ation to this strug le, (not merely an end to this horr ble war. but the complete destruction of the pagan principles from which it orizinaiedt Christian education of all free-peoples. lt is here that the school plays such an important part. We. who are fortunate enough to' live in a country as yet untouched bv the ravages of war, should not fall to recognize these facts and take full advantage of the God-given o-p- porturiitv of educating our child- ren in a Christian atmosphere. That many of our parents are not conscious of this is onlv too evident ESQ» lrcm their apparent indifference to‘ 3i, o their chlldrens poor attendance at Prize-General Prbfltiehfiv. Tardlness and irregular attendance formed a serious prob- lem. and. in this connection. I would like to point out the advisability oil starting your children on the first dav of school. Every effort should, also be made to see that they ar- rive at school on time. The crowded condition of our curriculum. espec- lallv in the senior grades. necassi- fates a fairly strict adherence to lm established time-table and this time-table is disturbed and the work of the whole class seriously fer-ed with bv some boys habitually arriving tardy. Due to the tireless energy of Mr.’ W. J. Brawders. truancy. while nmi entirelv absent from our school. did not present any very serious prob- lem, but the pernicious habit of some parents in keeping their bcys home on flimsy and foolish excus- es coupled with a mild epidemic of colds. etc... especially during the, months of November and December. served to cut clown our attendance average for the year. In common with the other city; schools. We made fitting observance, of Remembrance Day, st. George's Dav. and Empire Day. On all these occasions suitable programmes were arranged and a speaker provided. Our thanks to Major T. E. MacNutt, r. J. F. Lcightizer. and Mr. P J. Rossiter. are gratefully acknowledg- ed for their splendid addresses on these days. Cadet Training. as usual. received proper supervision and our Corps presented a very fine appearance on three occasions before the public, namely the Victory Loan parade, the Torch parade. and the annual inspection exercises. The many fine complimentary remarks, bv those who witnessed our boys in their sev- eral appearances. convince us that this veafs Corps added new laurels to their already firmlv established record for efficiency. A distinguish- ed feature of this year's inspection was the visit to to our Corps of Brigadier-General Connolly, Com- mandinr Officer of Military District No. 8, who was present in the city at the time. in connection with the, Torch parade and ceremonies. The General impacted the Corps at the school. spoke to ma of the boys personally, and in a brief talk to the Corps as a whole. paid tribute to their splendid marching and smart appearance. Cadet Rifle Shooting again en- gaged the interest and attention of a great manv of our Cadets during the winter months. To Mr. Oroken. the instructor. must go the makr portion of the credit for a very suc- cessful scason. It is regrettable that an unfortunate error in mailing ad- dress prevented our boys from corn- peting in the Provincial Small-Bore Rifle Competition. which they nsd previously won for three years in succession. but Mr. Ci-oken has cvorv right to be proud of his team of “crack shots" who attained a record of 95.5 per cent. on a total of sixtv targets. The medals and prizes wnn by these boys are tro-l chies well merited. Our poiicv of proper-iv conducted and supervised forms of recreatlcn for our boys Promoted many a stirring struggle on the "football field. hockey rink. and bowling al- ley. Our boys conducted themseivrs in true Queen Square fashion in all these activities and extend their sincerest. thanks to all who helped promote such spor .
