arose as usual about 11 on Saturday
morning and after partaking of her
breakfast-was noticed to be taking a
weak turn. The attending physican
and clergyman were hastily summoned
and she passed away at 18.30, after
receiving the last rites of the Holy
Catholic Church from Rev. Fr. lilc-
Qualid. The remains were taken to
Amherst Monday morning- accompan-
_ied by her son. where thcy will be
laid to rest alongside those of her hus-
band who predeceased her sixteen
years ago. "l‘here are left to mourn
the loss of a dear and loving mother
two daughters, Mrs. John McMurray
'of Amherst and Mrs. Melanson of
Wakefield, Mass. Also three sons, J.
D2 of Charlottetown, William of Sack-

An unusually _sad death occurred in
,the Charlottetown Hospital on Friday
July filth. uit., when Terence J. Mc-
Kenna, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mc-
Kenna, Baldwins Road. succumbed to
nppendlcitls after suffering agonizing
_pain for live days. T-he deceased had
always enjoyed good health duril18
his short ll-fe of twenty-five years until
‘about a week before his death when
he began to complain of not feeling
qulto well. Three -doctors were call-
ed in but nothing could be done to
relieve the intense pain and it was
decided to remove hini to the hospi-
tll. But it proved too late-he was be-
yond-the aid of human skill. Hs
_passed away within twenty-four hours
'after entering therhospltal. Terence
wai a young man of exemplary habits,
with a character beyond reproach and"

VALUED SOUVENIR.-Col. Moore
has received a much valued war sou-
venir in the shape of a German gas
mask, bearing the name of its orig-
inal wearer, Felix Kauffmann. The
mask, although showing signs of con-
siderable usage, is in good condition
and would probably be of use still lf-
available to a German.” It is enclos-
ed in a tin case, which is worn slung
over the shoulder and weighing near-
ly two pounds, quite an addition to
the already heavy equipment of the
soldier. lt is entirely different from
the mask used by the British soldier.
the latter being much lighter null
probably equally effective. Col. Moore
received it from Gunner Harold Moore
of No. 2 Siege Battery, and although
he never expects to use it. he will keep
it as u valued souvenir of the war.
The mask may be seen in the window
of Messrs. Black & Co., Sunnyside.

-A PLUCKY RESCUE.-A notable
rescue was made in Halifax on Thurs-
day last by Mr. -Arthur Davy. of
Charlottetown, who is engaged on
work at the terminals there. A boy
ran into the office where Mr. Davy is
employed and told him that a
youngster had fallen into the water.
,Mr. Davy hastened outside where a
crowd of men were gathered looking
at the struggling youth and taking
in the situation at a glance- =he
hurriedly threw off his coat ,and
jumped over the 20 foot embankment-
and swam out to where the boy _was
struggling. He succeeded in catch-
ing hold of him just as he was going
down for the last time and got him
ashore. Mr. Davy ‘at once started to
give the boy first aid treatment which
he fortunately was well posted in and
when the Qctors who had been sum-
moned, arrlved. the boy started cry-
ing, which in this case was a very
good thing, showing that -he was all
right again. Mr. Davy is a son of
Mr. Edward Davy, Richmond Street.
His courageous act is worthy of the
Carnegie Medal.
WEDDING BELLS.-A Very pretty..
wedding took place in St. Dunstan’s
Cathedral on Tuesday -morning July
23rd', when Miss Jennie Power of
Vernon River becamethe bride of Mr.
James Garland of_ Websters Corner.
The bride was' prcttily attired in a
blue silk suit with white hat and was
attended by her cousin, Miss Alice
Wbltty of Charlottetown. The groom
was ably supported by his cousin Mr.
Peter Garland. After breakfast the
bridal party and sixteen invited
guests drove to Pownal to the Foster
Hotel where dinner_was served and
an enjoyable afternoon spent. The
party then continued on their drive to
Websters Corner to the home of the
groom, where many were assembled
to `bld' a welcome to the newly married
couple. Among those present as
Bev. Father MacDonald, Fort Amis-
tus. He welcomed the bride, congrat-
ulated the groom and wished both
many years of happiness. The even-
ing was spent by singing and- dancing

hours of morning -wishing both Mr.
and Mrs. Garland a happy voyage
through life.. The numerous and‘
costly presents received showed the
popularity of both M-r. and Mrs.
Garland.
Mr. and Mrs. John A. Cameron, Gt.
George St., have received two inter-
esting letters from their son Frank,
who is in the thick of it in France.

was down to see the Eighth Battery
boys and spent some time with P.
Murnaghan and Dad Bovyer. At pre-

killed and five wounded, and he was
the only man left to return in the 'sec-

the batteries of the camp at Pets-
wavrs. including the Blish Battery
from Woodstock, which is entirely a
Brunswick Battery. ln the afternoon
a very high tribute was paid to the
65th Battery of which the oillcer com-
manding is Captain W. A. McKee.
of Moncton, in being called upon to
give an exhibition in shooting for the
Lleut.-Governor, inasmuch as it was
the Battery standing highest for
shooting eiiiciency in the camp. This
is an honor for which New
Brunswick and Prince Edwdrd Island
may well feel proud, the former for
furnishing the men, the latter " _for
furnishing the oiilcer commanding.”

IBLANDERS AMONG CREW. -
There were two P. E. Islanders among
the crew of the ill-fated oil tank
steamer Luca Blanco, which was sunk
after a three hours’ iight with ,a Ger-
,man submarine 35 miles off Halifax
town. second,engineer, and Jas. Mc-
Donald, Charlottetown, boatswain.
The larger portion of the crew were
shipped in England and at Montrealn
and those who met death on board the
ship ut tho height oi' the engagement
while they were at their work were
second Cook Disser, of England. and
Second Steward Muhone, of Montreal.
Captain Thomas says all his crow
stood by him in the iight, and hc
deeply regretted the loss of the two
men.
A highly respected citizen of Forest
Hill, passed away on August 2nd, af-
ter an_illness of about five weeks, in
the person of Malcolm MacDonald.
aged 06 years. Hc was a man of up-
right character, genial disposition.

and kind neighbor, His death is not
only an irreparable loss to the llunw.
but a great loss to the community in
which he was a leading and trusted
citizen. He ls survived by his wife
and one son, Daniel, on the homestead.
and one daughter, Mrs. Arthur M. Ben-
nett, Plymouth, Mass.. and two broth-
ers and two sisters, who have thel
sympathy of the community in their
bereavement. The funeral service
was conducted at the home and the
grave by the Rev. James Heron, ns-
sisted by the Rev. J. M, MacLeod. of
St. Peter's, and the remains, which
were followed by a large circle of
friends, were interred ln_ the old cem-
etery at Dundas. “The righteous hath,
hope in his death.”

her home, Cardross, P. E. Island, on
July 15, 1918, one of the oldest and
most respected ladies in the person
of Mrs. Margaret McLeod, widow or
the ‘la/te Mr. Norman McLeod. The
deceased was born in Scotland eighty-
nine years ago. She was n. woman of
a kind and cheerful disposition, ul-
ways ready to give a-helping hand to
the needy. She was in ailing health
for some time previous to her death.

the church -by one of the largest pro-
cessions seen on that road for some
time, showing the great esteem in
which she had been held. The remains
were carried into the Presbyterian
church, where service was held, after
which her body was laid to rest in
the beautiful cemetery at Cardigan,
beside her husband, who predeceased
her eleven years. There are loft to
cherlih the memory of a vcry dear
mother. ilvc daughters and two sons;
also a largc number of granrlclllltlren
and great grandchildren. The daught-
ers are Mrs. Dun Dewar, Boston. Mrs.

The people of Hunter River were
:realy shocked when on Tuesday
last it was learned that Mrs. Finlay
McKinnon had suddenly passed away
at tho early nge of 24 years.
The deceased had been for some
time suffering considerably from
heart trouble, but was up until the
last ami was able to give more or less
attention to her regular work. On
the morning of her death she and hcl'

.vhon Mrs. McKinnon fell suddenly
from her chair and expired in a few
moments. All that medical skill and
kind friends could do was done, but
all to no avail. The spirit had taken
its flight. ‘
Besides a sorrowlng husband and

Mrs: McKinnon was a general
favorite with all who had the plea-
sure of knowing her and will be much
missed in a large clrclco of fricnrls
and loved ones. But although her- loss
will be keenly felt, yet knowing that
she was ready for her Mas’ter's com-
ing and believing that she is now
wish her unbound spirit back into
bonds again. In their loneliness -the
loved ones have the Master-'s decree
saying "Not our will but Thine be
done."
The funeral which was held in the
Presbyterian Church, Hunter lilver,
was one of tbo largest over in that
place for a long time. The service
was conducted by Rev. R.H. Stavert,‘
who spoke from John VI 6.8.
