The audience almost filled the Y. M. C. A., ball at the temperance meetioy, last night, to bear the lecture delivered by Mre, Catherine Lente Stevenson,of Boston. Mra, Steven 01 took for her subject “The demande of the Christianity of to-day,”— particularly on the liquor problem. Mrs Steveneon assailed the saloon as the foe of the ‘church, the home and tne state, and denounced the humbug of the Government in regard to the plebiscite. She spoke ina very cleerand interesting manner for up- warde of an hour. Her quotations, which were exceptionally well chosen, were many and varied aud added much to the pleasure of the address. The vote ot thanks was moved by Mr. Raymond and seconded by Rev. Mr. Weddal!, who, with Rev. Mr. Bryan and Mrs. Poole, the president of *he Charlotte town brarch ofthe W.C. Ph U., occupied seats On the platform. . Justice Fitz- gerald, the chairman of ee meeting, thea made sa few remarks to which Mrs. Stevenson replied, after which the vote of thanks was put aod Carried uvanimously. At the close of the address Mise Bovyer sang @ very beautiful solo, and the bene- diction was pronounced by the Rev. Mr. Weddall. A SUGGESTIVE LEITER. es Sin,—The sad drowning which took place at Rocky Poin: on Tuesday night last, the night on which the excursion on board the steamer Elfin took p'ace, sheuld be a warning to the public that too much care cannot be exercised while walking on euch places as Rocky Point wharf, a pub- lic thorougnfare witbout a railing or any protection whatever, to enaure the safety of travellers. Would it not be more in keeping with the times if ourenergetic and everwatch- fal sapervisor would ca!) the atteation of our Local Government to this fact, insteai of awarding private contracts to his own sons. tions Nearmg Completion Work upon the sewers is ty ora, well. Work was begun on the 17th ot May, and already about eix and a-half miles of pipe have been laid. About two- @nd-a-half miles of pipe were put down last year. About a mile-and-three-quart- ers have yetto be sewered to complete this year’s contracts. It is expected that all the eections south of end iscluding Euston Sereet will be sewered by the latter part of Oetober. Next yenr all that portion of the city lying to the eertb of Euston Street will be sewered. This will mean the put: ting down of about six miles of pipe. Already there have been about 100 con- necticne made with the sewerage system, and they have all been satisfactory. The pumping stations at the east and wesi end of the city, are pearing completion. The station at the foot of Fitzroy street wil! be ready for use in about three weeks’ time. The station at the east end will be ready in about six weeks’ time. Hach station is equipped with a eeven horse- power gas engive. The reservoir itself is of concrete and rubble masonry and is completely buried. ‘The only evidence of itsexistence in sight is the email brick pumping house which surmounts it. Altogether about 200 men have been employed in the work of construction, and asum in the vicinity of $37,000 has been paid out in wages already this year. Rev. +o+ PERSONAL.
