MAY 22. 1950. wmm ”gy”g .----- Religion and Life By Very Rev. George 0. Pldgeon. D.D., L.L.D. First uoau-am or the United Church of Canada (copyright) pg, Lynn Harold liouah told mi, gully in a sermon here some go. A man went out for a ,um 1 a steep hillside and who uiittie son with am As he started out he tried to take the my, hand, but the little fellow "5 too independent to accept mg, no toddled alone. stumbling over this stick and baffled by that "me until a tail on a stone ...-ought a bleeding knee and a call (or his father's help. He lifted mm up and wiped away his tears: use lather said. "I never intended you to climb this hill alone." and hurl in hand they walked the .... at the way. Christ never intended us to ,-limb liie's rough road alone. and 1.... week we spoke of Him as the ail-suiticierit Helper able to meet the deepest needs of the in- divldual. To many of us Christ is g necessity for the common day; gt! could not live without Him. But. Christ means much more to the world than this. He is Bav- iour, and also King of Kings and Lord of Lords. For example. take it tciv truths about Christ from put-l:L'lltl0IlS which came to my IIPSK last wee-: and which exalt Him as Saviour and also as Lord nf all life, and as Jud-ge, the Arbit- er of Destiny. First. a. word from an English preacher which connects last wenkts testimonies with the thaiigiit oi todny: "rho Resurrec- tion ivas. the luminous and vic- torious consunnmation of the Cross , . It revealed the highest and deepest in the Divine and be- c.-.mc a new creative force in hu- man rxpcricnte The Christian chin.-ii is a new creation. not by water and the Word but the mys- irl')' or Rcdecmmg Love. The Cre- ator ill the Church is the Person o(lllCRFU1ZEillEr. He is not an I(Il'll expressed in a creed, but a Saliltilllr realized in experience." ,3 Bishop of the United Church of South India takes us a step farther: "Must we not coniront the world, which has all but lost thn .-eiise of any ultimate stan- darii of Judgiicnt. with the truth ii...i. II has is Judge, a Judge and a saviour. who has come and will come again? . . The Judge is al 0 the Saviour o.' the world-. It is br- cause the eternal Judge. who will at the end both pronounce and mrry out the tinal judgment on all human history, has visited us here in time and bound us by truth to Himself. that we have it message with which to coniront the world." , Many more similar confessions might be added from the litera- ture of the present hour. but them aipress for them all the depend- ence of humanity on Christ and their suthors' recognition of tho truth that He and none b;t He, has the right to rule. To many nations today these affirmations of Christ's absolute authority are just meaningless: some openly defying I-lis author- ltv: others ignoring His laws. 'I'hey tine been experimenting with dif- Iuent ways of life. Christ's teach. ing that love is the only law to which the human spirit can submit is treated as utterly unpraotical in a rough- and-tumble worid. They have put their trust in phyaiealv might in- stead. Their experiments are only proving the truth of Christ's teaching. Violence calls forth vio- lence in return. As Jesus put it: "They who take the sword shall perish with the sword." In twen- tieth century terms "should this not read. "more who resort to etomie bombs shall perish by atomic bombs." Look at the iacts. Just before Dr. John MacNelll of Toronto left the army in France to take part in the Y. M. C. A. appeal for funds across Canada in 1018, in; addressed I number at meetings and asked the men for a message to the folks at home. A quiet look- ing fellow in a far corner of the hut 3391' 10113 hesitation raid: "Tell them to see this thing through. ' Our men Taught and died in 1. war to end war, That war led to' a. worse one. Ilnd now we are threatened with a third. worse still. If tyrants are bent on forc- ing war on us in order to bind us: inchains. we may have to accept it again. but only to turn the tyr- rant back. War can never esta-' blish the Kingdom of love. Onlyi obedience to Christa law of love can bring in the new order for which we pray because the na- ture of the n-.c.uns determines the character of the end. Christ is King. whether we' ackriowe'ge Him or not. A great East Indian once exclaimed. "None but Jesus,i none but Jesus is worthy to wear the diadem of India." we may add: None but Jesus none but Jesus is worthy to 'he crowned, King of the nations. Christ is a's:i Judge of the na- tions. Jesuii said. "The Father . . has given all, judgment to the son." (John 5.32) . At. the endiof the age all will be called to ac- count before Him, but iudgment is always in process. and this is a period oi judgment. Consider the ways in which Hitler and Musc- lini had their own deeds brought home to them! Do not let us imag- ine that, because the free nations were God's instruments in bring- ing His Judgments home to them. we can escape the same. In so far as we transgress we too shall an- swer to the Judge or all. Babylon was God's instrument of judgment. on disobedient Israel. but when the victors turned justice into blind vengeance. they too were brought to book for her crimes. so it will be with those who sin to- day-even with the most highly favored of the axes.
