He knows that there a a time to" fight and a lime to run, and he! doesn't make the mistake oi doing the wrong thing. He knows too that there is a time to hide ii he can. and a time to dig. That time is when he knows he cannot win a fight. cannot run fast enough to get away, and there is no place in which he can hide. Then there is only one thing left to do and that is to dig. Happily for him it is the thing that he can do best. That is what he was doing now, digging. Things had gone wrong for Digger this day. He had started out to look for a dinner and hadn't found one. Looking had taken him iarther and farther from home. This didn't worry him until he saw a Man coming toward him, one oi the hated two-legged folk whom even the biggest of ‘Green Forest and Green Meadow folk tear. It is fear that makes ‘hate. West dis- carded a diamond (to tell East to abandon that suit. and South's position was now hopeless. East could not be kept off lead, whe- titer declarer went ahead with clubs or triedthehearts and East's shift to spades was fatal to the contract. South should have counted his tricks more carefully. and he might have discovered the play that ivould virtually guarantee his contract. He did not need all six club tricks — five, or even four, tricks in that. suit would be am-r pie. ivii-h his three sure diamonds and two sure hearts. The great. danger was that clubs would not break and, ii they didn't, that East would have the stopper and WOiiid lead through declarers spades. To guard against this to the greatest possible extent, de- clarer should have won the first trick with the diamond king and led a low rlub toward his own hand, putting in the nine When East played low. He could fight. but. he knew that no matter how ixell he fought he would lose in the end. There was no place to go, so he would have to make a place and make lt quick. He went to work right where he was for it happened to be a good place for digging. The soil was loose and sandy. No stones were in the ivay. and the way the sand went flying up in the air was something to see. It was a regular fountain of sand. "Looks as ii an atomic bomb has exploded down in the groun ," chuckled the Man with the club as he ran faster. By the time he got there his club’ was of no use. Digger was too far down in the ground to be struck, and still going down so fast that in a. jiffy he would be out of sight. Even now little more than his tail was to be seen. So the club was tossed aside and the Man reached in and grabbed that provoking tail.
