" entertainment; First there was Saturday night Fever, then came Grease, now there's Thank God It's Friday. 'IGIF, staring Donna Summer and the Commodores, while perhaps more plotless and disjointed than its two disco/dance—movie pred—' ecessors, has a lot 1) offer it's audience. There is precious little plot to 'IGIF, but there seems to be a theme, of sorts. Marquees and pos- ters for the movie remark that "after 5000 years of civilization, we all re— serve a break," and this is what the movie is all about. The "Zoo Disco" is hav— ing a dance contest with music cupplied by the incomparable Commodores. Well, while the DI stalls for time (the truck car— rying the Oommodores' equipment is delayed) , all manner of antics 'oc— cur. The most notewor— V,M<ID\7]IHIB Wfilfiiflf ‘ thy occurance during this part of the movie is Ni- cole Sims' (played by disco queen and sex god- dess Donna Summer) in- credible debut as a disco artist. The contest is won by Leatherman, a disco-dance Virtuoso, and a high-school girl whom he has secretly sneaked into the disco). Iwenttothemovietosee Donna Summer in action, being a long—time fan of hers, and ended up rather disappointed on that score. Summer mouths few lines outside of her over— exuberant performance of "Iast Dance", and most of the shots of her are somewhat leSS than flatter- -ing. Her presentation of "'Iast Dance" is not what one would expect either — — - hair curled into a huge fright wig hiding her face, she bounces around like a THE bike. ShOp s'pbrt lodge ltd . Maybe a slower paced movie and a few meaningful lines of dialogue would have helped. As for the other performances, well, who can say? Incidents, aqmsing and serious, fly across the screen so quickly that it is difficult to judge who is performing well and who is not. However, ass the characters are so bezarre that the viewer can get to know them almost immediately. by Dave Wood 'Ihe personalities of the Commodores are not elaborated ck either, but their exciting performance of "Ibo Hot to Trot" during the dance contest makes up for the cheerful haziness of their characters. All in all, then 'Ihank God It's Friday is a fun movie, but little else. It prOvides an exaggerated View of what happens in discotheques everywhere, delivers lots of situation comedy in rapid fire succession, and boxes the viewer's ears with non-stop disco music. Final verdict: shallow, but exciting and very funny. fR03fl.’.’/.’.’.’.’.’ TO ALL FRESHMAN STUDENTS As co-ordinator of the Shinerama drive for 1978, I would like to extend a warm thank you to all of you who were out shining shoes in aid of cystic fibrosis, on Sept. 7. I hope that all of you have recovered from any colds that may have been a direct result of your tangle with the weather. The seventy—seven brave freshmen who managed to turn up in spite of the inclement weather raised $2,153. 'lhis sum, although it is less than last year, is very impressive. The weather was not only a deterrent in getting shiners, but also in getting shinees. It was too wet for your average 'Joe' on the drop a coin in your cans for a donation. It may have been rough out there in the rain but all across Canada other Frosh were out shining also and it was all for a good cause. I hope that each one of you is proud of your contribution. Cystic fibrosis is a potentially fatal disease and the dollars you raised will be used to find a cure and save thousands of C.F. children and adults. - Once again I'd like to say thank you. I enjoyed working with you and hope to see you around campus in the future.
