Schlessinger Bros. of Vienna have purchased Lady Nutling, 2:2834, by Nutling. Oil City, Bradford, Warren and Erie, Pa., will compose a new western Penn- sylvania circuit for next season. A yearling filly, by Baron Rogers, is said to be one of the fastest animals ev- er trained at the Lexington (Ky.) track. Mr. B. Tappan of Vienna is now in America and expects to make several purchases of trotters before he returns. Trainer E. Clayton arrived from Vi- enna recently witb acommission to pur- chase 22 head of high class American trotters. Twenty thousand dollars is the price which the Hon. C. M. Reed of Erie, Pa., places on his Wilton mares, Silicon aud Silurian. While Mr. A. B. Spreckels, the Cali- fornia millionaire, has recently disposed of all his thoroughbreds be retains his entire trotting stable. Mr. C. W. Williams was well pleased with the prices realized on his young- sters by Allerton at the recent Fasig sale. Twenty head averaged $820. Dr. E. F. Kunkle of Philadelphia has started a breeding farm at Fort Washington, Pa. The doctor owns the gray trotter Isaac as well as a number of other good ones. Mr. 8. D. Kelly of Woodbridge, N. J., owns the mare Vesta, by Bayonne Prince, that recently showed a half in 1:06 and the last quarter in 3039 sec- onds over a half mile track. Effie Powers, 2:1014, started in 17 races during the past season, all of which, I think, were on half mile tracks. She won 12 of these, the last 7 of her races being won in straight heats.— Turf, Field and Farm. FADS OF FASHION. Jackets are shorter than heretofore, althorgh longer models are by no means discarded. The blouse has taken sucha hold on the fashionable fancy that it appears every where. There is nothing more desirable than the medium length, trim and stylish jacket. It gives perfect freedom and is essentially the business woman’s wrap. The demand for fancy velvet is some- thing prodigious. Entire costumcs are made of it, and enormous wraps, large enough to cover a woman up bodily, are built from this material. Bourette, camel’s hair fabrics and the slightly rough surfaced materials to which so many popular grades of suit- ing belong are extensively ued by the best tailors for handson;e costumes. It is said that there are ten distinct shades of reddish purple aside from the tone used in bishops’ robes. This eccle- siastical purple is a most elegant and attractive shade and in fine goods is simply superb. Plain velvet in combination is much approved, and this, with satin, will be much more in demand during the im- mediate future than the two sorts of wool goods that some designers are try- ing to introduce. Every sort of fur will be worn during the coming season, the preference being given to the short, thick ones, which are for many purposes much more dressy. Entire blouses are made of fur and eton jackets and cutaways are seen. An entire dress of plaid velvet has a perfectly plain skirt and a waist with close sides and a blouse effect in front. The yoke, belt and high, flaring collar are the only bits of plain color in the costume. The sleeves fit the armsto the shoulders, where there are large puiis. —New York Ledger WELL JRIED Kemeny. — Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Svrup has been used forever fifty vears by millions of motuers for their children while teething with perfect snecesa, It soothes the child softens the gume, allays all pain, cures wiod colic, and is the best remedy for Diarrbova. The painstaking man doesn’t always | suffer the most pain. The hog may be a squealer, but he never gives anything away. There is no insurance against the flames kindled by a woman’s eyes. Most people neglect doing tomorrow what they have put off doing today. People like to listen to advice only when it confirms their own opinions, Instructors in elocution may teach a man how to talk, but unfortunately not what to say. A good word might be said in favor of congress gaiters, but shoes with tongues should be able to speak for themselves. Women barbers will never become popular with men. They can’t forget the scrape Samson got into by going to a woman for a hair cut.-—Chicago News. INDUSTRIAL NOTES. Japan has 56 cotton mills, and Persia has just established its first glassworks. In this branch of indus- try the question of supremacy appears to have been firmly and finally settled. ‘*Two hours and 15 minutes of daily work by each ablebodied man, if system- atically applied, would produce all the food, clothing and shelter the people need,’’ says Carroll D.
