Road Bill. 2 . Sir,—During the past five years I have had, perhaps, as muh business experience | with the Telegraph Company as any busi- | stitutions fair play, yet at the call of what they held to be duty they settled down anietly to avery seygre and thankless } physical strain. This is true of all | parties; whether government .Oonserva- tives, Liberals or ‘‘Irreconcilables,” they | all showed theinselves ready to take their | medicine like men. The Conservatives | livided into two relays, each going on duty twelve hours ont of the twenty-four. The Liberals were in three relays, eight bours each—the longer Conservative term being apparently due to the desire of the leaders | to be sure of a large majority on any vote. The Third Party, alittle band of half a lozen, could not arrange so systematic- ally, but always managed to have repre- sentatives ready for emergencies. Thus divided up, tke House met in a corageous and orderly manner a most severe and protracted strain. Whether it was a matter of conscience or a matter of party, their course had much 1 itthat was admirable. The memlurs ofeach of these sections in tle Houre were honestly striving to accomplish what sch believed a desirable and jastifiable end, and while the result might appear to be on the surface a purposeless and noisy talk, it was nevertheless the outcome of conscience, ability and courage in all the | parties concerned, And the debate was no mere gabble. It | as a brainy and gallant contest, as full | f cleverness as of courage. The pages of iiansard are in parts more interesting reading than any work of fiction, and a study of the whole report of the proceedings would be a pretty liberal edu cation to many people. It is certainly a pity to see that the time of members and the public money was, so far as progress with public business is concerned, wasted, | but in so far as the chara_ter of Parliament is ‘oncerned there was much in the pro- ceedings of last yee< which the people can afford to be prous of, as well as much which they must deplore. are ful < 4 + + * * * * * ¥* * * ™ a « * * * * * * * BEER SEOS. Every man or woman can yet what they want from those shops on Friday or Saturday as well as on Sunday; but if Mr. MeNrill had tomake a living for himself and his family atthe work of a laborer or in the eager press of the busi- ness community, he would find it quite impossible to find the time for any but a Sunday use of the electric ¢ars or the pub- lic park.
